Job description

Job Title:ย Part Time Instructor - Ballet Schoolย forย mixed genderย ballet classesย 
Department:ย Education and Training, Training-ย Ballet Schoolย ย 
Reports To:ย Director, San Francisco Ballet Schoolย ย 
Classification:ย Part-time, non-exemptย ย 
Compensation:ย $70 for teaching hours; $30 for meetingsย ย

Job Purpose:ย ย 

To deliver theย Schoolโ€™sย curriculum,ย determinedย by the Director, to the students enrolled in San Francisco Ballet School; to develop and nurture these students; toย transmitย a passion for the art form.ย ย 

SFBS faculty may be assigned to teach any of the levels,ย Pre-Ballet throughย Level 8, orย adult openย classes.ย  All School faculty are expected toย participateย fully in the life of theย School, which may include weekly faculty meetings, attending performances andย special events, and individuals may be invited to teach during the summer session as the program needs demand.ย 

This role will teach up to three levels on a 6-day per week schedule, including beginningย pointeย work. Evenings and Saturdays areย required.ย 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:ย ย 

Theย Schoolย is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students.ย  All School faculty are expected to adhere to and support the School and Association policiesย regardingย disciplinary action as well as child health and safety policies.ย 

  • Structure and teach ballet classes following theย Schoolโ€™sย stated curriculum.ย  This includes level-appropriate classroom technical instruction as well as mentoring students in the artistic,ย musicalย and psychological demands needed for a career in ballet, while focusing onย maintainingย proper discipline in the studio (ballet class etiquette, dress code, etc.)ย 

  • Attends faculty meetings andย participatesย in continuing education activities under the supervision of the Director.ย  Participates in the ongoing daily activities of theย School, thisย includes;ย interacting with faculty, staff, and pianists, and attending performances, auditions, demonstrations,ย lecturesย and other events related to theย Schoolย asย required.ย 

  • Record and report on student attendance; relay concerns to the Director and School staffย 

  • Monitors studentsโ€™ progressย on a daily basisย and reports issues to the Director as needed.ย  Meets with parents andย providesย feedback andย assistanceย asย appropriate.ย 

  • Performs other duties asย requiredย or assigned by supervisor, which mayย occur (with notice)ย outside of the regular class schedule.ย ย

Years and Types of Related Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience teaching ballet to school-age children

  • A commitment to the aims andobjectivesof San Francisco Ballet School

  • Developsstudents by providing kind,appropriate, and inspiring training in technique

  • Provides level-appropriate combinations within the structure of the stated curriculum

  • Givescorrections to all students. Creates an environment where students can accept and learn from mistakes,coachesstudents through difficulties and provides ongoing feedback and encouragement.

  • Responsibility for the overall discipline of the class, including enforcing dress code and ensuring that proper ballet etiquette is taught andmaintained.

  • Proactive and flexible approach to work, willingness to be involved in all areas of theSchool'sdance initiatives

  • Manages class and rehearsals in a professional manner.

  • Personable and well presented, including wearing the proper attire for teaching

  • Maintainappropriate staff-studentrelationships;complieswith the Conduct with Minors policy and other School/Association policies related to health and welfare.

  • Communicateswith students, staff, colleagues, parentsetcin a manner that ensures clear and mutual understanding of information.

  • Demonstrates diplomacy and tact in all interactions.

  • Builds rapport and develops effective, collaborative relationships with colleagues, pianists, and staff.

  • Supports and provides equal and fair treatment for all.

  • First aid and CPR qualification or willingness to attend training

Physical Demands:

  • All work is on-site at 455 Franklin Street. Schedule is subject to change.

  • Demonstrates ballet movements, styles,musicalityand dynamics. Able to physically correct and work with students.

Special Equipment Used:

  • Audio Visualtechnology system in studio

Other:

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office products, or a willingness to undergo training necessary to produce evaluations and record attendance.
