As a server in a restaurant with no experience, you can expect to undergo training or work in an entry-level position while you gain experience. Some restaurants have new servers shadow experienced members of the waitstaff during their first shifts. You learn how to take orders and explain the menu options to customers. Your duties may also include bringing food and drinks from tables to the kitchen, bussing and cleaning tables, and handling other cleaning and preparation responsibilities. However, some restaurants may separate these duties into individual positions, such as bussers and food runners. Restaurants often let new servers wait tables during non-peak hours while they learn the job.
