What support or training is typically provided to new RN coders with no prior coding experience?

Many employers offer comprehensive onboarding and training programs specifically designed for RN coders who are new to medical coding. You can expect to receive guidance from experienced coding professionals, access to educational resources, and potentially even sponsored courses or opportunities for coding certification. During your initial weeks, you'll likely work closely with a mentor and engage in hands-on learning to build your coding proficiency. This supportive environment helps bridge the gap between your clinical knowledge and the specialized skills required for accurate medical coding, setting you up for long-term success in the field.

How to get into RN coding?

To become an RN coder, you typically need to be a registered nurse with clinical experience and obtain coding certification such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Familiarity with medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and coding software is essential. On-the-job training or specialized courses can help develop coding skills for this role.

How to get hired as a medical coder with no experience?

To get hired as a no-experience medical coder, obtain a recognized certification such as the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and complete relevant training or coursework. Entry-level positions often require strong attention to detail, basic knowledge of medical terminology and coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and the ability to work independently in a healthcare setting.

What is a No Experience RN Coder job?

A No Experience RN Coder job is an entry-level position where a registered nurse (RN) transitions into medical coding without prior coding experience. These roles typically involve reviewing patient records, assigning standardized codes for diagnoses and procedures, and ensuring accurate medical billing and compliance. Employers may provide training or require completion of a coding certification, such as the CPC or CCS. Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and healthcare documentation is essential. This role offers nurses an opportunity to shift into a non-clinical career while using their healthcare expertise.

Are RN coders in demand?

Registered Nurse (RN) coders are in demand due to the increasing need for accurate medical coding for insurance reimbursement and healthcare documentation. They often require certification and familiarity with coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and employment opportunities are available in hospitals, clinics, and insurance companies.

Can I become a coder with no experience?

No Experience Rn Coder roles typically require some foundational knowledge of coding languages and medical coding systems, but many entry-level positions are open to candidates with minimal or no prior experience if they complete relevant training or certification programs. Developing skills in coding software and understanding medical terminology can improve job prospects for beginners. Certification such as CPC or CCS can also enhance employability in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the No Experience Rn Coder position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a No Experience RN Coder, you need an active RN license, a strong understanding of medical terminology, and a willingness to learn medical coding principles, even without prior coding experience. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and a desire to pursue coding certifications like CPC or CCS will provide a strong foundation for growth. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills are essential for interpreting clinical documentation and collaborating with healthcare teams. These skills ensure accurate coding, compliance with regulations, and support efficient healthcare operations while building a new career path.

Job description

Passport Health - Registered Nurse - Travel Medicine (Multi-Clinic)
Passport Health is North America's largest travel medicine and immunization provider, with 300+ clinics across the U.S. and Canada. We're looking for experienced RNs who are energized by working independently, thrive across multiple environments, and are comfortable with a schedule that flexes with client demand. If you need a static single-location assignment, a team around you every day, or a traditional clinical ladder, this role probably isn't the right fit, and that's okay. For the right nurse, it's unlike anything else in the field.
What Makes This Role Different - In our clinics, you are the only clinical staff member in the building. You're assessing, educating, administering, and documenting all of it, on your own, across two primary locations. You will have a network of clinical leadership and support accessible remotely if ever in need of support. Travel medicine is a specialty. You'll develop deep expertise in vaccine-preventable diseases, international health risks, and pre-travel health planning. Every client interaction is a true consultation, not a check-the-box encounter, but an experience that we pride ourselves on.
What a real day looks like - You arrive at your assigned clinic for the day, set up, and work through a schedule of pre-booked travel health consultations - typically 4 to 7 appointments depending on the day and location. Each visit runs 45 minutes: you review the client's itinerary, assess health risks, administer vaccines, and send them off prepared. Between appointments, you're managing inventory, completing documentation, and handling any follow-up.
What You'll Do -
  • Conduct in-depth travel health consultations and educate clients on destination-specific risks
  • Administer vaccines per standing orders and monitor for adverse reactions
  • Recommend and promote travel health products and medications as clinically appropriate
  • Own clinic setup, inventory, compliance, and documentation independently - no administrative support staff on site
  • Provide coverage at a third nearby location (Glen Ellyn) for call-outs and PTO as needed
  • Support onsite corporate wellness or vaccine clinic events as needed
  • Complete ongoing travel medicine training - we invest in keeping your clinical knowledge current

Current Opening Details -
  • Location(s) Naperville, IL (2 days/week) + Hinsdale, IL (3 days/week); Glen Ellyn, IL coverage as needed
  • Compensation: $40.00/hr
  • Employment Type: Full-time / 40 hours per week

Benefits -
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement savings
  • Paid time off (PTO)

Scheduling - The Honest Picture - This is a structured, full-time role with a defined home base across two clinics. Here's what that means in practice:
  • Your primary schedule is 2 days per week in Naperville and 3 days per week in Hinsdale
  • Glen Ellyn serves as your additional coverage location - you're the go-to when that clinic needs support for call-outs or PTO
  • All three locations are within the same geographic area - travel between them is straightforward
  • Full-time hours are consistent, with schedule predictability that reflects a defined weekly structure
  • Peak travel seasons (typically February-August) generally bring higher volume across all locations

What You Need to Succeed -
  • Active RN license in good standing
  • 3+ year of clinical nursing experience (travel medicine background a plus, not required)
  • Genuinely comfortable being the only person in the clinic
  • Reliable transportation to travel amongst local clinics
  • Comfortable working across multiple clinic locations and adapting quickly to each environment
  • Strong patient communication and education skills
  • Reliable access to a personal computer (training systems require desktop or laptop)
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification

Ready to apply? If you're an experienced RN who wants to work autonomously and interact with patients in a meaningful way - we'd love to hear from you. If you want a single home clinic every day, a team around you at all times, or a clear clinical ladder to climb, this role likely isn't the right match and we'd rather you know that now than find out in week two.
