Join the Surgical Acute Care team in a 63-bed unit featuring 49 private beds and 9 observation beds. The unit cares for a diverse surgical and acute-care population, including postoperative, trauma, and overflow medical patients.

Patient Population & Responsibilities
  • Postoperative surgical patients
  • Trauma patients
  • Medical overflow
  • Dressing changes and wound care
  • IV therapy
  • Pain management
  • Drains and NG tubes
  • Central lines
  • TPN
  • Critical thinking and comprehensive bedside nursing care
  • Strong teamwork and communication

Typical RN Ratios:

  • Days: 4–5 patients/RN
  • Nights: 5–6 patients/RN
  • May increase to 1:6 days / 1:7 nights when absolutely necessary
Requirements
  • Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that the IL license application has been initiated
  • BLS (AHA)
  • Post-op nursing experience
  • Strong critical-thinking skills

  • Travelers must be willing to float to units matching their level of experience

RN Drip Requirements: RNs do not routinely titrate drips. Heparin is the primary titratable/set-rate drip.

 

Two pre-assigned Charge RNs on each shift; Charge RNs do not take patient assignments House Supervisor available 24/7 PCT support: Days: 7–10 patients/PCT Nights: 10–15 patients/PCT PCTs assist with vitals, accu-checks, ADLs, turning, and ambulation Some patients are on telemetry Phillips telemetry monitors with central monitor technicians Bedside RNs are not required to interpret telemetry strips Respiratory support includes CPAP and high-flow oxygen RT manages nebulizer treatments; RNs manage inhalers and may place patients on CPAP No ventilators on the unit
