These entry-level positions often involve basic tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, and simple inspections, while learning more complex skills on the job. Many employers offer on-the-job training or apprenticeships to help new mechanics build their knowledge and advance in their careers. This role is ideal for those who are interested in cars and are willing to learn the necessary technical skills.

What are the duties of a no experience mechanic?

As a new mechanic with no experience, your duties may include things like performing basic service and preventative maintenance on machines, installing new components, or supporting an experienced mechanic during complex tasks. Depending on your employer, you may travel to service equipment, attend training courses, participate in an apprenticeship, or perform other tasks as assigned. Most companies use this position as a type of training period to make sure you have all the skills you need to become a regular mechanic. As such, this job may be part-time, though it usually changes to full-time once you meet the expectations of your employer.

What types of tasks can a no experience mechanic expect to handle during their first few months on the job?

As a No Experience Mechanic, you’ll typically start with basic, supervised tasks such as assisting with routine maintenance, organizing tools, and performing simple inspections. You might be responsible for oil changes, tire rotations, or cleaning parts, all while learning proper safety procedures. This hands-on experience allows you to gradually build foundational skills and gain exposure to more complex repairs under the guidance of experienced technicians. The team environment is usually supportive, with senior mechanics providing mentorship and on-the-job training to help you advance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a no experience mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a No Experience Mechanic, basic mechanical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and a high school diploma or equivalent are essential. Familiarity with hand tools, safety equipment, and possibly entry-level automotive training programs or certifications like ASE Student Certification can be beneficial. Strong attention to detail, good communication, and a proactive attitude help newcomers stand out in shop environments. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient work and support ongoing development in the automotive repair field.

Job description

Job Title
Mechanical Project Engineer III
Job Description
Are you looking to begin your engineering career and grow within a company where you can develop technical skills, gain project experience, and contribute to meaningful customer projects? At Vanderlande, we are seeking motivated and curious early-career engineers who are eager to learn, collaborate, and build a strong foundation in mechanical project engineering.
As the global market leader for future-proof logistics process automation, Vanderlande supports baggage handling operations at more than 600 airports globally, including 12 of the top 20 airports, and provides automation solutions for leading parcel and warehousing customers.
We are looking for a Mechanical Project Engineer III to support the North American Engineering Airport Department. This is an entry-level position intended for recent college graduates or candidates with little to no professional engineering experience. The MPE III will work under the guidance of experienced Mechanical Project Engineers, Project Lead Engineers, and other discipline leads to develop the technical, project execution, and communication skills required to support airport baggage handling system projects.
In this role, the MPE III will assist with mechanical layouts, 2D and 3D modeling, engineering documentation, design checks, equipment lists, installation support documentation, and project coordination activities. The position is designed as a development role where the employee will learn Vanderlande's products, tools, processes, design standards, and project execution methods while contributing to active project deliverables.
Success in this role requires a strong willingness to learn, attention to detail, curiosity, dependability, and the ability to ask questions, accept feedback, and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
  • Support experienced Mechanical Project Engineers in translating customer drawings, specifications, and project requirements into mechanical design deliverables.
  • Assist with the development and modification of 2D customer approval drawings, installation layout drawings, and project documentation.
  • Support 3D modeling activities using Autodesk and Vanderlande design tools, including basic model updates, layout revisions, and drawing coordination.
  • Participate in basic clash review and coordination activities under the direction of a lead engineer or BIM coordinator.
  • Assist with spatial checks for clearance envelopes, maintenance access, egress pathways, forklift aisles, and installation constraints.
  • Support system and component-level calculations such as throughput, motor power, belt pull, equipment loading, or other calculations as assigned and reviewed by a senior engineer.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining equipment lists, conveyor lists, motor manifests, bills of material, and other mechanical engineering tracking documents.
  • Help prepare clear engineering documentation, markups, installation notes, and supporting information for project teams, site teams, and installation subcontractors.
  • Learn how to specify standard mechanical equipment and support the preparation of equipment information for procurement or release.
  • Participate in internal design reviews, model reviews, and project coordination meetings as assigned.
  • Support project document control by organizing, updating, and maintaining engineering files in approved project systems.
  • Travel to project sites as needed to support surveys, observe installations, assist with documentation, and gain field experience.
  • Support installation and commissioning activities from the Marietta office and, when required, on site.
  • Actively participate in onboarding, training, and mentoring activities to build knowledge of Vanderlande products, engineering processes, safety requirements, and airport baggage handling systems.
  • Communicate progress, questions, risks, and issues clearly to assigned mentors, task leads, and project team members.
  • Follow Vanderlande safety, quality, and engineering standards while learning how to apply them in project work.

Position Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
  • 0-2 years of relevant work experience; internship, co-op, senior design, manufacturing, construction, automation, or material-handling experience is preferred but not required.
  • Strong willingness to learn mechanical project engineering in an active project environment.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including mechanics, machine design, materials, statics, dynamics, or related coursework.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings, layouts, and technical documentation.
  • Exposure to AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar CAD/modeling tools preferred.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and accept direction from experienced engineers and project leads.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to follow standards, procedures, checklists, and design guidance.
  • Proactive approach to asking questions, seeking clarification, and communicating when support is needed.
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks, meet deadlines, and communicate status regularly.
  • Interest in airport baggage handling systems, logistics automation, industrial equipment, or construction/project execution.
  • Must be willing and able to travel domestically and internationally as needed for training, project support, site surveys, installation support, and commissioning activities.

Desired Qualifications
  • Internship, co-op, capstone, or academic project experience involving mechanical design, automation, manufacturing, construction, robotics, material handling, or industrial systems.
  • Exposure to 2D drafting, 3D modeling, BIM coordination, or layout development.
  • Familiarity with engineering calculations, technical reports, or design documentation.
  • Familiarity with Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, Navisworks, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar tools.
  • Interest in learning safety, ergonomics, OSHA, building-code, and airport-specific design requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills and interest in project planning, scheduling, and deliverable tracking.
  • Curiosity about how mechanical systems are fabricated, installed, commissioned, and maintained.
  • Ability to work both independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively with project team members.
