JOB SUMMARY

The Cross-Country Head Coach/Strength & Conditioning Coach is responsible for establishing, developing, and managing the Cleveland State Community College Cross Country program while providing structured strength and conditioning support for all Cleveland State athletic teams including Baseball, Softball, Men's & Women's Basketball, Volleyball and Men's Golf. This position promotes student-athlete development through training, injury prevention, recruiting, student retention efforts, and enhanced athletic performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Head Cross Country Coach Responsibilities (60%)

  • Recruit, develop, and retain student-athletes while promoting academic success, accountability, sportsmanship, and competitive growth.
  • Plan and oversee practices, workouts, competitions, team travel, schedules, equipment needs, and daily program operations.
  • Monitor student-athlete academic progress, eligibility, and compliance with Cleveland State Community College (CSCC), TCCAA (Tennessee Community College Athletic Association), and NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) requirements.
  • Communicate and collaborate with student-athletes, Athletics staff, Admissions, Compliance, and campus partners.
  • Maintain accurate program records, submit required reports and documentation, manage budget requests, and maintain expenditure records.
  • Represent CSCC Athletics professionally through competitions, recruiting activities, and community engagement.
  • Host at least one home Cross Country event each season and generate a minimum of $5,000 annually through fundraising efforts.

Strength & Conditioning Coach Responsibilities (35%)

  • Develop and implement safe, structured strength and conditioning programs focused on strength, mobility, endurance, injury prevention, and sport-specific performance.
  • Collaborate with coaches and athletic training staff to support student-athlete readiness, performance, and return-to-play needs.
  • Supervise training sessions to ensure proper technique, safety, accountability, and effective use of equipment.
  • Coordinate preseason, in-season, and offseason conditioning plans while maintaining organized schedules and communication.
  • Maintain the Mark Smith Performance Center, including equipment organization, maintenance, and inventory records.

Additional Responsibilities (5%)

  • Attend all college functions as required.
  • Provide operational support for athletics events, including banquets, fundraisers, and youth clinics.
  • Maintain flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as needed.
  • The appointee may be required to achieve additional skill, knowledge, or credential levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

EQUIPMENT

Work activities routinely involve work with tools and equipment related to all athletic sports and physical fitness. Activities also involve work with personal computers and peripheral devices, as well as basic office machines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite for reporting, tracking, and documentation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, attentive to detail, flexible, and manage stressful situations.
  • Possess strong interpersonal communication skills and maintain focus with job responsibilities.
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills and strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of procedures to be followed in the event of an athletic related emergency.

JOB STANDARDS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in any combination of:
    • Program design/implementation (e.g., program development, sport-specific training plans, implementation of conditioning programs, etc.).
    • Instruction (e.g., leading individual/team sessions, equipment use safety, etc.).
    • Performance training (e.g., speed/agility/quickness, endurance/cardiovascular conditioning, performance testing and athlete assessments, etc.).

AND

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in cross-country coaching in any combination of:
    • Coaching (e.g. head coach, assistant coach, running/endurance, camp/clinic instructor).
    • Athletic administration (e.g., team travel coordination, equipment management, scheduling practices/competitions, etc.).
    • Recruitment (e.g., evaluating athletic talent, coordinating campus visits, etc.).
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds as required to perform the essential functions of the Strength & Conditioning Coach role.
  • Valid driver's license for operating a college-owned vehicles, including passenger vans.

JOB LOCATION

This is an on-site position based in the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium on the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee. Regular travel is required for athletic competitions, recruiting, meetings, and other College-related activities throughout the College's service area, the region, and the country.
