St. Thomas Aquinas High Schoolin Edison, NJ, a private co-educational Catholic school operating under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, is seeking Security personnel.

Job Summary:

The Armed School Security Officer must integrate professional campus safety operations with a commitment to the school’s faith-based, family-oriented educational environment. The Officer is expected to provide an advanced layer of physical safety, asset protection, and threat deterrence for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on the school’s campus. Operating primarily on a10-month school-year schedulewhen school is in session, an experienced professional, with exceptional de-escalation skills, and a welcoming presence suitable for a private Catholic school community. Role focuses on regulating building access, preventing disruptions, and upholding diocesan safety protocols and values.

Key Responsibilities
  • Armed Deterrence & Response:Provide an active, visible armed safety presence on campus to deter, detect, and decisively respond to high-level security threats or active incidents.
  • Access Control & Surveillance:Manage the primary visitor access desk, verify guest identification, and monitor the school's digital video management systems.
  • Campus Patrols:Conduct routine physical patrols of hallways, stairwells, cafeterias, parking lots, and the school perimeter to deter unauthorized entry and vandalism.
  • Campus Patrol:Traffic Control:Coordinate morning and afternoon school bus arrival and departure areas to maintain an orderly vehicle flow.
  • Emergency Preparedness:Lead and evaluate mandatory New Jersey school security drills—including fire, lockdown, evacuation, and active shooter scenarios,in coordination with school administration. Collaborate and act as a local point of contact for responding emergency personnel, including the Edison Police Department, fire department, and EMS.
  • De-escalation & Student Relations:Foster positive, supportive mentorship relationships with students, safely intervening in behavioral disputes or student altercations utilizing verbal judo and conflict resolution.
  • Liaison to Emergency Services:Act as the primary, seamless point of contact for responding local law enforcement agencies, including the Edison Police Department, as well as local fire and EMS crews.
  • Incident Documentation:Author highly detailed, accurate, and confidential incident reports regarding safety infractions, medical emergencies, or property damage for the Principal and the Director of Security.
  • Agency Coordination:Event Support:Provide security coverage for extracurricular activities, athletic games, and evening or weekend school community events.
Qualifications, Licensure & Diocesan Requirements
  • Background Clearance:Must pass a comprehensive criminal history background check and fingerprinting via the New Jersey Department of Education. Employment Verification
  • Safe Environment Training:Successful completion of the diocesanVirtus / Protecting God’s Childrentraining program.
  • Institutional Mission:A strong commitment to upholding the moral values, safety policies, and faith-centered mission of a Catholic educational environment.
  • New Jersey SORA:Must hold a valid, active New JerseyArmed SORA (Red Card)license issued by the New Jersey State Police.
  • Permit to Carry (PTC):Must possess a valid, current State of New JerseyPermit to Carry a Handgun, along with documentation of an annual firearms qualification certificate supervised by a PTC-approved instructor.
  • Prior Experience:A minimum of 5 to 10+ years of honorable service in municipal/state law enforcement or military police is preferred.
  • Certifications:Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage.
  • Physical Demands:Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, move quickly across a multi-acre campus, and work in both indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
