Job description

Position: Sr. Scientist

Location: St. Paul, Minnesota

Duration: 06 Months (Possible for Extension or Conversion)

Shift: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Job Summary:

Responsible for performing material assessments to support medical device production, research and development, and regulatory submissions within the Science and Technology Materials Group lab in Little Canada, Minnesota (Woodridge location). This role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, development of study plans, and leadership in problem-solving initiatives within a dynamic laboratory environment. Strong organizational, technical, and documentation skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform material characterization and analysis using techniques such as Metallography, Optical Microscopy, SEM/EDS, Microhardness Testing, Laser Raman Spectroscopy, and FTIR.
  • Collaborate with scientists and project teams to define and execute test plans.
  • Conduct hands-on laboratory testing and analysis to support materials science needs.
  • Analyze experimental data and prepare detailed technical reports.
  • Document all laboratory activities in compliance with GMP standards using electronic notebook systems.
  • Apply core materials science principles to evaluate and interpret test results.
  • Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation effectively.

Accountability & Work Approach:

  • Apply academic and industry knowledge in chemistry/materials science within a fast-paced lab environment.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail, problem-solving capability, and technical writing skills.
  • Work under direction from supervisors and senior scientists while managing shifting priorities.
  • Maintain effective collaboration within cross-functional teams.

Work Environment:

  • Laboratory setting requiring use of appropriate safety equipment.
  • Exposure to common laboratory chemicals and biological materials.
  • Combination of sitting and standing during work activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of relevant laboratory or industry experience.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques and analytical instrumentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience documenting laboratory work in compliance with GMP guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with biomaterials such as Nitinol, stainless steel, titanium, carbon, and polyurethanes.
  • Understanding of material interactions with biological systems.
