Nih Nci information

What is the NIH NCI?

The NIH NCI stands for the National Cancer Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NCI is the U.S. government's principal agency for cancer research and training. Its mission is to lead, conduct, and support cancer research to advance scientific knowledge and help prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. The NCI also provides funding for cancer research, supports clinical trials, and disseminates information to the public and health professionals.

What are common challenges faced when working on NIH NCI-funded research projects, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Working on NIH NCI-funded research projects often involves navigating strict regulatory requirements, managing complex data, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Job seekers should be prepared to adapt to changing project priorities, maintain meticulous documentation, and communicate effectively with both scientific and administrative staff. Familiarity with grant guidelines, human subjects protocols, and data security standards is highly beneficial for success in this environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NIH NCI research scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research Scientist at the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI), you need an advanced degree in biological sciences or a related field, strong research experience, and a solid understanding of cancer biology. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, data analysis tools like R or Python, and compliance systems such as IRB protocols are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration skills, and effective scientific communication set candidates apart. These competencies are vital for conducting high-impact research, ensuring data integrity, and driving innovation in cancer treatment and prevention.

Job description

The NYU Langone Health Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine is seeking a board-certified/board-eligible Interventional Pulmonologist to join our expanding Section at our NYULH Manhattan location.
NYU Langone Health is a well-established, but still a rapidly growing academic medical center with multiple campuses across the New York City metropolitan area. The Division is highly active, with services in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and multiple Long Island campuses, as well as at Bellevue Hospital, New York’s premier safety-net city hospital. Our Section is focused on the full spectrum of Interventional Pulmonology, encompassing both benign and malignant airway and parenchymal disorders, pleural disease, and related interventions. We continue to expand our scope with the addition of cutting-edge, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. The division also boasts a robust NIH/NCI-funded research program with opportunities for clinical and translational investigations in the evolving fields of Interventional Pulmonology and Thoracic Oncology.
Our team of Interventional Pulmonologists has access to dedicated procedure block time in an OR built specifically for interventional procedures. We are looking for a new partner to join this collaborative and dynamic team.
Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide outpatient consultative services in Interventional Pulmonology and Oncopulmonology.
  • Provide inpatient call coverage (1 in 5) for Interventional Pulmonology services at NYULH Manhattan and Bellevue.
  • Serve as the primary attending during one day of dedicated OR block time weekly for Interventional Pulmonary procedures.
  • Establish robust relationships and facilitate program growth with colleagues in Pulmonology, Oncology, and Thoracic Surgery.
  • Contribute to clinical and translational research investigations with partners in the Division and beyond.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Train advanced interventional pulmonary fellows and general pulmonary and critical care medicine fellows in the inpatient setting, the OR, and at outpatient clinical sites.
