Job description

Job Description:
The shift manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations and assigning major projects in the production area as needed. This position will assist in training and development of their production team to ensure safety, quality, efficiency, and performance standards are consistently met. This role provides hands- on leadership across shifts, coaches supervisors and teams, addresses operational issues in real time, and ensure smooth shift-to-shift continuity while meeting key performance indications (KPIs), project goals, and training plans and timelines.
Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Production & Operations Management
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the majority of processes within their department.
    • Oversee daily production operations and adjust staffing, resources, and priorities based on demand and volume.
    • Coordinate closely with manufacturing engineering, supervisors, maintenance, quality, and safety teams to resolve operational issues.
    • Ensure production lines are properly staffed, balanced, organized, and equipped with required materials and documentation.
    • Assist on the production floor as needed.
    • Monitor production performance, yield, and output; identify issues and implement corrective actions in real time.
    • Ensure all samples are graded and delivered on schedule.
    • Maintain orderly, clean, and efficient production areas through consistent 5s practices.
    • Confirm raw materials and production supplies are prepared for current and upcoming shifts to ensure seamless transitions.
  • Leadership and team development
    • Coach, develop, and support supervisors to address performance gaps and improve team effectiveness.
    • Create and maintain training schedules and assist in training and development of their production team to ensure employees are fully trained in procedures and processes.
    • Conduct pre-shift and end-of-shift meetings covering safety, production status, and operational updates.
    • Address employee conduct and policy violations, completing required documentation accurately and promptly.
    • Lead and participate in continuous improvement and process optimization initiatives to achieve departmental KPI's
  • Communication and Shift Coordination
    • Conduct Gemba walks and review pass-downs at shift start, maintaining clear and timely communication with prior subsequent shifts to ensure operational continuity.
    • Communicate production issues, escalations, and updates to management in a professional and timely manner.
    • Monitor and respond promptly to all communication channels (text, calls, chat), including attendance updates one hour prior before shift.
  • Safety and compliance
    • Enforce all safety policies, including PPE requirements and Lock out/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, inspecting compliance during pre-shift meetings and throughout the shift.
    • Immediately address and escalate safety or medical incidents, ensuring accurate documentation.
    • Perform routine audits of machines, processes, and paperwork to verify compliance and operator understanding.
  • Administrative and reporting
    • Track and report attendance; approve EPTO requests within one hour of shift start.
    • Update production trackers and complete all required reports accurately and on time.
    • Process corrective action documentation promptly and in accordance with policy.
    • Submit IT support tickets as needed to resolve production related issues.
    • Participate in monthly inventory counts and ensure documentation is prepared for upcoming reporting periods.
  • Operational support
    • Monitor, maintain, and replenish departmental supplies, including PPE and cleaning room essentials.
    • Support special projects and operational initiatives as assigned by management.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Associates degree required, bachelors preferred.
  • Minimum of two years, five (5) years preferred of supervisory experience required in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven leadership experience in production or operational environments.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and workflow optimization.
  • Ability to create, interpret, and follow written work instructions and production reports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 5s, lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem solving skills and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and regulatory compliance (including PPE and LOTO)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, which may include early starting times and occasional starting times and occasional overtimes during night shift and/or weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.
