Nationwide Arena, home to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets, is a 20,000+ seat venue located in the heart of the booming Arena District in Columbus, Ohio. Welcoming over one million Guests through over 100 events annually, Nationwide Arena has hosted a variety of events including the NHL All-Star Game and Entry Draft, NCAA Tournament and National Championship games, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Monster Truck exhibitions, Rodeos, and many more in addition to its hallmark Columbus Blue Jackets games and lively concert schedule.
Summary
The Security Department is seeking a Security & Emergency Services Manager. The successful candidate will bring security leadership experience in large-capacity sports and/or entertainment venue(s), high levels of organization and attention to detail as it pertains to scheduling and inventory, a team-first mindset in which they are able to support, empower, and build rapport with both full and part-time Security Department team members, and a flexible schedule which will allow for completing both daily office work and executing arena events (including on weekends and holidays).
Assists in oversight of the day-to-day operation of the Security Department for Nationwide Arena which includes close partnership with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Delaware North Sportservice. Manages the Security Staff on event days and non-event days. Responsible for the general Safety, Security and operational Policies and Procedures for the department as well as the training of Staff relative to these subject matters, alongside the Director of Security and Emergency Services.
The Event Services & Security team consists of full-time and part-time Staff who cover roles associated with Guest Services (front of house, frontline interaction) and Security (both back of house and front of house interaction). The Security & Emergency Services Manager is responsible for a staff of Full Time Hourly Security Guards tasked with the operation of the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week Security Operations Center as well as Part Time Hourly Security Guards and Supervisors covering all Back-of-House and Front-of-House areas.
Additional responsibilities include assisting with the coordination of Third-Party Security to supplement event staffing as well as Emergency Services which includes Columbus Division of Police, Columbus Division of Fire and event Emergency Medical Services support.
The Security & Emergency Services Manager works closely with the Event Services Management team (key partners) to ensure venue-wide coverage is aligned to support our Guests and event requirements. Supporting the collaborative environment of the department, the Security & Emergency Services Manager is assisted by the Event Services & Security Administrator.
This role will have a salary between $55,000 - $62,000, based on the relevant experience and job qualifications of the chosen candidate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties will be assigned.
  • Work with the Director of Security & Emergency Services, Event Services Management team, Event Services & Security Administrator, Event Production Management team and other partners for special events to ensure departmental, event, and Guest-facing Security needs are met and exceeded.
  • Plan and coordinate staffing for the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week Security Operations Center as well as staffing needs for each event relative to Security & Emergency Services. Maintain close oversight of any adjustments required with assistance from the Event Services & Security Administrator.
  • Ensure NHL Security-related protocols are upheld for all relative events. Coordinates with show/special event Security Managers, Tour Managers, and Promoters for all event-related Security needs with a focus on preparation and communication to ensure Staff are prepared on show/special event days.
  • Brief Security Staff including hired Third-Party Security and Emergency Services partners prior to events regarding associated plans and expectations.
  • Highly engaged in the operation of events from a Security perspective in terms of evaluating the experience of our Guests and stakeholders, adjusting to on-site elements and ensuring all obligations are being met or exceeded.
  • Provide timely post-event feedback to the Director of Security & Emergency Services to ensure alignment with venue policies and procedures related, but not limited to, emergency situations, crowd management, and Security.
  • Regularly evaluate the technical knowledge and performance of those individuals associated with the Security department. Organize and conduct meetings with Staff to ensure cohesion. Determine employment status based on Staff alignment with policies and procedures. Make Staff recognition for high performance and milestones a priority.
  • Assist with creating content associated with Security department standard operating guidelines which includes policies and procedures related to the operation of the Security Operations Center as well as general departmental topics and Security-related event positions.
  • Develop and manage relationships with Vendors, Contractors, Staff, and departments tied to the overall Security of Nationwide Arena including the service yard, loading dock, attached garage, and perimeter areas.
  • Oversee daily and routine building inspections, access control components, CCTV systems, equipment inventory and maintenance, risk assessment and vulnerabilities, and incident reporting for Nationwide Arena. Engage appropriate personnel when repairs and upgrades are necessary.
  • Respond to all emergencies and provide guidance to the Security department during normal business hours, non-business hours, holidays, and weekends as required. Assist with emergency procedures including venue evacuations.
  • Assist with executing Security department goals and projects. Partners with the Director of Security & Emergency Services to develop and strategize these efforts.
  • Serve as a beacon for Staff excellence, harboring a spirit of openness to all those interacted with.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The Security & Emergency Services Manager manages a staff of Full Time Hourly Security Guards and Supervisors as well as Part Time Hourly Security Guards and Supervisors.
Overseeing Third-Party Security to supplement event staffing, inclusive of maintaining and fortifying parter relationship, providing staffing calls and event briefings for each event, and monitoring work performance to identify opportunities for both staff recognition and constructive feedback.
The ability to carry oneself as a subject matter expert as well as a key stakeholder within the Event Services & Security team is essential. Serving as a positive role model for all those within Columbus Blue Jackets Arena Management and Columbus Blue Jackets as well as with on-site Corporate Partners and Vendors is always expected.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree from four-year college or university
  • Minimum two years of experience operating within a Security department at a Coordinator level or above at a major event venue (10,000+ capacity) required. Law enforcement experience may be considered, if duties demonstrably included oversight and planning of large-scale events/public assembly.
  • Minimum two years training in safety, security, or law enforcement required
  • Experience with building automation systems, CCTV, and access control systems is required. Genetec experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience is required
  • Knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS), crowd management, and risk mitigation strategies preferred
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-pressure environments
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Customer service mindset with the ability to maintain professionalism in challenging situations
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and law enforcement may be considered
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
