Professionals in Next Generation Sequencing typically spend their days preparing and processing biological samples, operating sequencing instruments, and analyzing genomic data. They are responsible for troubleshooting technical issues, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring quality control throughout the sequencing workflow. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as bioinformaticians, clinicians, and research scientists—is common to interpret sequencing results and contribute to project goals. This role also involves detailed record-keeping and adherence to regulatory or laboratory standards, making organization and communication important aspects of the job.
To excel in a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) role, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genomics, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in a life science field. Proficiency with NGS platforms (such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore), laboratory automation tools, and bioinformatics software is highly valued, alongside relevant certifications in genomics or molecular diagnostics. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills set successful professionals apart. These competencies ensure high-quality sequencing results, efficient workflow, and productive collaboration in fast-paced research or clinical environments.
A Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) job involves working with advanced DNA and RNA sequencing technologies to analyze genetic material. Professionals in this field may design experiments, prepare biological samples, operate sequencing instruments, and interpret genomic data. Roles can vary from research scientists and bioinformaticians to lab technicians and data analysts. NGS is widely used in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology for applications such as disease research, personalized medicine, and evolutionary studies. Strong skills in molecular biology, computational analysis, and data interpretation are typically required.

The Patel Lab is in the Department of Neurosurgery, Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center and the Center for Advanced Genomic Technologies and focuses on single cell genomics in brain tumors. Particular focus of the lab includes single cell analyses of patient samples, development of rationally designed cellular therapies, development and study of complex patient specific tumor models to understand minimal residual disease and tumor evolution during therapy, and use of functional genomics to understand tumor dynamics. The lab is seeking a technician to perform a variety of molecular biology based assays to support multiple projects in the lab.
This position will be focused on supporting work in the development of cellular therapies for glioblastoma. Activities related to this will include complex tissue culture, maintenance and transduction of T cell cultures, tissue processing, in vivo experiments using mouse models of glioblastoma, single cell RNA-sequencing and library generation, cloning, and other molecular biology techniques.
Primary responsibilities:
Lab maintenance (ordering, making common reagents/buffers, competent cells, basic tissue culture maintenance)
Experimental work related to lab activities including tissue culture, cloning, sample preparation for next generation sequencing under supervision from graduate students/postdoctoral fellows
Oversight over mouse colony and animal activities.
Ideal candidates will have the following knowledge and/or experience:
- Tissue culture including cell lines and primary human T cells
- Mouse survival surgeries and mouse colony management
- Molecular biology techniques such as cloning and flow cytometry
- Next generation sequencing library preparation
