Job description

Duties Description The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has an exciting opportunity to support the statewide Park Ranger Program as a Park Ranger 2. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Park Rangers serve as ambassadors and site security at State Parks and Historic Sites across New York; their duties are wide-ranging in scope and include patrolling campgrounds, beaches, cabin areas, marinas, trails, and park buildings; assisting with camping and boater registration and permits; confirming park entrances and exits are secure; helping with general security services for large events such as concerts, fairs, including monitoring and screening attendees or providing traffic and crowd control; and assisting with traffic management during peak periods. Park Rangers respond to calls for assistance, summon emergency responders as needed and ensure that patrons and property are safe and secure until police arrive.

In addition, Park Rangers administer basic First Aid as trained and may assist police with search and rescue efforts and fire prevention and suppression activities. In addition to their regular duties, Park Rangers may periodically assist staff at toll booths and perform bank runs and audits. Rangers also assist site staff in maintaining and closing facilities, maintaining swim facility safety, and similar.

Park Rangers are subject to the provisions of the Security Guard Act of 1993, are unarmed, and have neither peace nor police officer status. Minimum Qualifications The Park Ranger 2 must have an Associate's or higher level degree** and at least one season* of experience in a parks or recreational organization performing any of the following duties: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education or stewardship, forest management, park maintenance or operations, historic preservation or interpretation, or wildlife management or preservation; or must have a high school or equivalency diploma and three seasons*of the experience noted above. Candidates must be at least 18years of age at the time of appointment;; must be able to physically perform the duties of the position; must satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation, including fingerprinting; must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license as a term and condition of employment; and must possess and maintain a current New York State Security Guard Certification as a term and condition of employment.

*A season is defined as working at least 300 hours of performing the duties noted above. **Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S

Candidates are responsible for the evaluation fee. Additional Comments Operational Needs: Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed. Must be able to perform medium physical labor.

Must have the ability to communicate effectively and read and comprehend written materials. Must possess strong computer and smart phone skills. Must successfully complete a background investigation.

The duties of this position require you to have and maintain a valid driver's license that allows you to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Failure to maintain a valid driver's license will result in removal from this position. The qualifications for appointment, as a condition of employment, to the Park Ranger 2 position requires that you have and maintain a valid New York State Security Guard License.
