What does a New Product Introduction Engineer do?

A New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer is responsible for managing the process of bringing new products from the design phase into full-scale manufacturing. They collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure products are manufacturable, cost-effective, and meet quality standards. NPI Engineers develop and optimize manufacturing processes, coordinate pilot builds, and troubleshoot issues that arise during production ramp-up. Their work is crucial for a smooth transition from prototype to mass production, helping companies launch new products efficiently and successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a New Product Introduction Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a New Product Introduction Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering, manufacturing processes, and project management, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, ERP systems, and quality management tools, as well as certifications like Six Sigma or PMP, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional communication, and organizational skills help drive successful product launches and collaboration across teams. These skills enable efficient transition from design to production, ensuring product quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely market delivery.

What are the typical challenges faced by a New Product Introduction Engineer during the transition from prototype to mass production?

New Product Introduction Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring manufacturability of prototypes, aligning cross-functional teams on design changes, and meeting tight production deadlines. Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

We're seeking a Senior New Product Introduction Engineer to help transition advanced electronics and avionics from prototype to flight-ready hardware for next-generation lunar systems.

If you're from automotive, consumer electronics, high tech, aerospace, defense, contract manufacturing, or adjacent industries, your electronics manufacturing expertise translates directly to our needs. This role is ideal for someone who can navigate electronics design and manufacturability trade spaces, and who can manage complex NPI programs effectively because they have working technical knowledge of the hardware.

We are primarily seeking a senior-level engineer to help establish and scale this capability, but are open to exceptional candidates at adjacent career levels whose electronics manufacturing, NPI, and cross-functional execution experience align with the needs of the role.

You will serve as a technical bridge between development, manufacturing, test, supply chain, suppliers, and contract manufacturers, ensuring design intent, manufacturability inputs, build strategy, and production risks are understood and acted on throughout the hardware NPI lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Execute new product introduction for complex electronics assemblies, PCBAs, and avionics hardware.
  • Drive DFM, DFA, and DFT improvements through hands-on analysis and manufacturability feedback.
  • Coordinate build configuration readiness, including engineering documentation, release packages, and build records.
  • Support manufacturing process development, validation, troubleshooting, and technical issue closure.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for manufacturing, assembly, and test failures.
  • Represent the development team on manufacturing floors and with contract manufacturers to resolve build issues and close technical gaps.
  • Align build strategies, prototype and pilot build objectives, risk posture, and production readiness criteria.
  • Communicate build risks, technical issues, and production-readiness status in program reviews and cross-functional forums.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field.
  • 8+ years of experience combining electronics manufacturing expertise with technical program or NPI coordination responsibilities.
  • Hands-on experience with PCBA manufacturing, SMT, electronic assembly processes, or test integration.
  • Experience in electronics manufacturing and product development environments.
  • Strong understanding of DFM, DFA, and DFT principles with demonstrated implementation experience.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or electronics manufacturing services providers on build execution, process development, or issue resolution.
  • Experience driving root cause analysis, corrective actions, or process improvements.
  • Ability to manage complex technical programs while maintaining hands-on engineering involvement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of IPC standards, electronics manufacturing processes, and quality systems.
  • Experience with manufacturing readiness reviews, build readiness reviews, or technical process validation.
  • Experience managing NPI programs from prototype through pilot build and production ramp.
  • Experience with scalable production systems or manufacturing processes designed for volume growth.
  • Background in hardware technical program management, manufacturing program management, product operations, or similar cross-functional hardware execution roles.
  • Experience with complex, multi-board electronic systems, avionics assemblies, or electronics products transitioned from prototype to production.
