New Grad Ai Software Engineer information

What is the difference between New Grad Ai Software Engineer vs Ai Software Engineer?

AspectNew Grad Ai Software EngineerAi Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS, AI, or related field; internship experience preferredBachelor's or Master's degree; 1+ years experience often required
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, collaborative teams, mentorship programsMid-level to senior teams, more independent responsibilities
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, research labs hiring new graduatesEstablished companies, industry projects, ongoing AI development

The main difference between a New Grad Ai Software Engineer and an Ai Software Engineer is experience level. The new graduate role is designed for recent graduates with limited professional experience, focusing on learning and growth. In contrast, an Ai Software Engineer typically has more experience, handling complex projects independently. Both roles require a strong foundation in AI and software development, but the level of responsibility and independence increases with experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a new grad AI software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a New Grad AI Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science fundamentals, programming (Python, Java, or C++), and a solid understanding of machine learning concepts, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, experience with data processing tools, and knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS or Azure are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, a willingness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help new grads stand out. These skills and qualities enable engineers to contribute to complex AI projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What does a new grad AI software engineer do?

A New Grad AI Software Engineer is an entry-level professional who designs, develops, and tests artificial intelligence systems and applications. They often work with machine learning models, data processing, and software development tools to build intelligent solutions. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, collaborating with senior engineers, and staying updated on the latest AI techniques. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and opportunities to contribute to innovative AI projects while learning from experienced colleagues.

What are some common challenges faced by new grad AI software engineers in their first year on the job?

New grad AI Software Engineers often face the challenge of bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. Adapting to large, production-level codebases, collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams, and learning to balance experimentation with delivery timelines are common hurdles. Additionally, keeping up with rapidly evolving AI technologies while mastering company-specific tools and workflows can be demanding. However, mentorship programs and regular code reviews are typically in place to support new grads as they grow into their role.

Job description

The job

As an AI Software Engineer at Dataroots, you play a key role in delivering end-to-end data and AI solutions for our clients. Working within a broader ecosystem of AI engineers, data engineers, and cloud experts, you combine software engineering and AI expertise to build impactful applications around LLMs and modern GenAI use cases.

You go beyond experimentation: you design, build, and deploy production-ready AI systems that create real business value. Your focus is on delivering well-architected, scalable, and secure solutions, ensuring that what you build is not just functional, but robust, maintainable, and ready to evolve in real-world settings.

The Skills Software Engineering Skills
  • Strong Python experience on larger projects with solid software design principles.
  • Proficient with Git and SQL, with hands-on experience applying DevOps/MLOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines and monitoring for AI systems.
  • Cloud engineering experience (using tools such as Terraform and Docker), and some experience architecting and deploying production-grade applications.
  • You have good knowledge of at least one cloud platform: Azure, AWS, GCP.
GenAI skills
  • Good understanding of (gen)AI concepts, and genuine interest in staying up to date with the field.
  • Experience designing, building, and deploying LLM applications in Python, with an eye for common failure modes (latency, cost, rate limits, non-determinism) and how to design around them.
  • A production mindset when working with LLM systems: thinking about reliability, evaluation, observability, and cost. You care about how these systems behave in production, not just whether they work in a demo.
  • Some familiarity with agentic and retrieval-based patterns.
  • You know the model landscape (Claude, GPT, Gemini, open-weight models) well enough to reason about trade-offs: capability, cost, and latency.
  • You take governance and security seriously: auth, data boundaries, and responsible use of AI in enterprise environments.
Nice to have
  • You use AI tools daily to design, write, and review code with the ability to critically evaluate their output.
  • Hands-on experience with data engineering (ELT, orchestration) or managed data platforms (e.g. Databricks, Fabric).
  • You are opinionated about governance, security, and responsible use of AI in real-world environments.
  • Affinity with application security and cloud networking.
  • Experience deploying applications on Kubernetes.

Not every box needs to be ticked to be a great fit. If you're excited about the role and eager to grow, we'd still love to hear from you.
