Job description
The interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University (Indianapolis, IN) invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position beginning August 2027. We seek a colleague who values interdisciplinary approaches to neuroscience, has a demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching practices, and is prepared to engage in collaborative research with undergraduate students. Standard teaching load is three courses (nine credit hours) of in-person instruction per semester plus an active program of research involving undergraduate collaborators.
Candidates must have a PhD by the time of appointment either in neuroscience or a closely related field. The successful applicant will be broadly trained in neuroscience and will be ready to teach core and discipline-specific neuroscience program courses, as well as majors' and/or non-majors' courses in one or more of the disciplines heavily represented in the neuroscience major: biology, computer science, philosophy and psychology. Our greatest needs are in biological and psychological approaches to neuroscience. (For additional details on the curriculum, please visit: https://www.butler.edu/arts-sciences/neuroscience/neuroscience-curriculum/.) Applicants with research specializations that complement those of our current faculty and that are accessible and of interest to undergraduate students are especially encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to evidence-based and engaged-learning pedagogies as well as a commitment to building an inclusive classroom and scholarly environment for an increasingly diverse student body. The Butler Neuroscience Program values candidates who share our commitment to engagement and inclusion of students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
To apply, applicants should submit the following:
- a cover letter discussing qualifications for and interest in the position
- a CV
- a teaching statement that describes previous experience with and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching as well as evidence-based pedagogies
- a research statement that includes plans for a program of research involving undergraduate students
- transcripts of graduate work or other evidence of terminal degree(s) (unofficial is acceptable for candidate review)
- a list of 3-5 references, including name, title, and contact information (shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation)
Review of applications will begin September 15, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. For inquiries regarding the search, contact Dr. Tara Lineweaver (tlinewea@butler.edu), program director and search committee chair.
