Networking Assistant information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Networking Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Networking Assistant, you need a solid understanding of computer networking concepts, basic troubleshooting skills, and typically a relevant associate degree or certification such as CompTIA Network+. Familiarity with network management tools, cabling systems, and operating systems like Windows and Linux is commonly required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring reliable network performance, timely issue resolution, and smooth collaboration with IT teams.

How does a Networking Assistant typically collaborate with other IT team members on troubleshooting network issues?

Networking Assistants often work closely with network engineers, system administrators, and help desk staff to resolve connectivity or performance problems. They may be responsible for gathering initial diagnostics, escalating complex issues to senior team members, and documenting troubleshooting steps taken. This collaborative approach ensures efficient problem-solving and helps Networking Assistants learn from more experienced colleagues, fostering skill development and teamwork within the IT department.

What are Networking Assistants?

Networking Assistants are entry-level professionals who help manage, maintain, and troubleshoot computer networks within organizations. They assist network administrators with installing hardware, configuring software, monitoring network performance, and resolving connectivity issues. Their responsibilities often include supporting end-users, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring network security protocols are followed. This role is essential in keeping an organization’s IT infrastructure running efficiently and securely.

What is the difference between Networking Assistant vs Network Technician?

AspectNetworking AssistantNetwork Technician
CertificationsCompTIA A+, Cisco CCNA (basic)CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, higher certifications
Work EnvironmentSupport roles, office settings, assisting with network setupHands-on troubleshooting, on-site hardware repairs
Job ResponsibilitiesAssist with network configurations, monitor network performanceInstall, troubleshoot, and repair network hardware and software

While both roles support network operations, a Networking Assistant primarily assists with setup and monitoring, whereas a Network Technician performs hands-on troubleshooting and repairs. The roles often overlap in certifications and work environments, but Network Technicians typically have more technical responsibilities and experience.

Job description

The NVIDIA Experience (NVEX) Solutions Engineering team is looking for a senior Computer or Software Engineer who is ready to become an authority in ground-breaking network technology used in AI clusters. Our team of software engineers bridge the gap between the customer support teams and R&D, focusing on resolution of tough problems from the front lines and providing the highest level of support for InfiniBand, NVLink, and Spectrum-X network systems that interconnect GPUs and AI compute infrastructure.

The level of work we do requires a software engineering background for deep code and logic analysis. It is also essential to have a proven grasp of in-field, production network operations and a history of collaborating closely with both customer engineering teams and internal R&D to triage and resolve major issues. Candidates must be very comfortable interacting with and relaying technical information to various groups ranging from R&D engineers, support groups, account teams, and executive-level management. The individual will interact daily with both internal and external customers, so superb interpersonal and communication skills are essential.SE team members also get to spend time working within R&D groups taking on feature development and bug fixes to directly enhance the products we support.

What you will be doing:

  • Assist various network and AI cluster support teams in reproducing, resolving, and root causing sophisticated customer issues

  • Work with NVIDIA R&D teams to rapidly develop bug fixes, workarounds, and solutions for customers using NVIDIA's network technologies

  • Work directly with customer engineers on live triage of critical and high-profile issues

  • Become an authority in NVIDIA Spectrum-X networking used in AI clusters

  • Develop support and analysis tools to help analyze and root cause field issues

  • Daily use of ground breaking AI tools for software development, log and trace analysis, and source code debugging

  • Spend a portion of time working directly within an R&D team developing core software

  • Occasional work on weekends or holidays to support critical customers

What we need to see:

  • Candidates must have software development experience in the networking industry either for a network hardware manufacturer or software integrator

  • Candidates must have experience working directly with customers and support groups to triage and resolve critical in-field, in-production networking problems

  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer engineering or related (or equivalent experience)

  • 5+ years of experience developing software (C, C++, Python, or Go)

  • 5+ years of experience directly supporting end-customers, partners, or integrators for network equipment and infrastructures

  • Experience analyzing, developing, and debugging at least 2 of the following: Linux NIC drivers, switch ASICs and SDKs, embedded network device firmware, Linux based network equipment (routers, switches, gateways, etc), network operating systems

  • Expert knowledge of Ethernet and IP routing down to the protocol's byte level

  • Ability to analyze and learn evolving end-to-end systems flow, quickly learn how unfamiliar software layers are integrated, and be able to find logic bugs within an increasingly complex environment

  • Passion and motivation to isolate, root cause, and resolve high impact issues with executive visibility

  • Professional-level communication skills, including adjusting communication to the technical level of the audience, and staying calm and focused in negative situations.

Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and the pay of employees in similar positions. The base salary range is 140,000 USD - 224,250 USD for Level 3, and 168,000 USD - 270,250 USD for Level 4.

You will also be eligible for equity and benefits.

Applications for this job will be accepted at least until April 27, 2026.
