Job description

Installs and supports communications equipment and infrastructure components within the guidelines of hardware and software technical manuals, the National and Federal Electrician's Code Manuals, County and departmental policies and procedures. Adheres to city and departmental policies and procedures. Reports to Deputy CIO - Infrastructure & Communications or other designated person and works with directors, supervisors, elected officials, co-workers, vendors, consultants and other IT professionals to provide technical support. Serves as team lead for Network group.
KEY REPONIBILITIES:
  • Tests and recommends equipment and software related to Network Infrastructure. Contributes to developing and designing network systems to maximizes network performance through ongoing monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Evaluate and provides recommendations, specifications and documentation for alternative options regarding network Infrastructure changes or upgrades options. Develops procedures for maintaining network infrastructure. Maintains accurate inventory database on network infrastructure related hardware, applicable software and user access.
  • Responds to security alerts and works to prevent security issues.
  • Manages VMware, SAN, active directory, and windows server. Performs management and maintenance of network components and software.
  • Performs troubleshooting, upgrades, maintenance, and problem-solving activities on network infrastructure hardware and software, servers, and components. Supports, monitors, and tests hardware and software pertaining to Network Infrastructure. Helps design, implement, and tests network infrastructure security.
  • Assists in short- and long-term strategic planning to meet network requirements.
  • Performs critical fault isolation on voice and data network hardware and software to minimize communication outages.
  • Recommends and schedules for the repair of network equipment covered by warranties and maintenance contracts.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
  • Network planning, security, monitoring performance, testing, and providing other Network Administrators with guidance.
  • Troubleshoots network and infrastructure problems and installs new networking and infrastructure equipment and upgrades.

Education: High diploma or GED. AA/AS in Networking, Computer Science, Engineering or a related field preferred.
Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years in a Network Administrator position and relevant technical experience with network hardware and a Microsoft network environment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge (position requirements at entry):
  • Considerable knowledge of communications technology and concepts, hardware configurations, network communications best practices, software, operating systems, manual systems, applications systems, data communications and networking.
  • Considerable knowledge of IP networks, switches, routers, server hardware and operating systems.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal legal requirements, and city and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in acquiring and maintaining skill sets on new and evolving communications technologies.
  • Proficiency in translating technical specifications and the use of applications for network diagramming and documentation.
  • Proficiency in wiring, cabling, data circuit connections, communications electronics, network management, and data communications protocols.
  • Mastery of troubleshooting, problem solving, and operation of tools including sniffers, fiber testers, cable assemblers, and cable activity indicators.

Skills (position requirements at entry):
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team or independently.
  • Must have flexible schedule to perform 24-hour on call duty

Licensing/Certification:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.
  • CCNP and/or CCNA certifications preferred

OTHER:
This position requires staff call up in emergency situations.
Travel is required from office to other locations in this position.
