Job Description
The Network Engineer 3 is an advanced technical role responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting projects that secure the organization's network perimeter. This position leads initiatives involving firewall platforms, DDoS protection technologies, load balancers, and hybrid/cloud network integrations to ensure secure, resilient, and scalable connectivity. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the network engineer provides technical leadership across complex projects, partners with architecture and security teams, and drives best practices for network edge design, availability, and threat mitigation.
Responsibilities
Lead the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of network border security solutions, including firewalls, DDoS mitigation platforms, switch and routing equipment, and load balancers.
Plan and execute secure network integrations with public and private cloud environments, supporting hybrid connectivity and cloud-native services.
Serve as a technical resource for complex projects, providing guidance, design validation, and troubleshooting expertise.
Collaborate with security, infrastructure, and application teams to align network edge solutions with enterprise security standards and architectural principles.
Drive improvements in network resilience, availability, and performance through proactive design, testing, and optimization.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, standards, and runbooks related to network border and security services.
Support incident response and root cause analysis for network security events, contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend enhancements to strengthen the organization's network security posture.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science or related technical field or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
Five years of experience with data networking or general telecommunications experience.
Technical skills including programming, installation, configuration, and inventory management.
Expert level analysis and design skills involving the ability to gather data on systems issues, define alternative approaches, assess business impact, recommend cost effective solutions, and develop and implement those solutions. Demonstrate expert proficiency in two of the following technologies and advanced skills and knowledge in the balance:
Core routing - routing protocols and route redistribution using OSPF, and BGP, network technologies including VRFs, QoS, IPv6 and NAT
Core switching - advanced data center switching using 10Gig, EtherChannel, FCoE, virtual port channels, virtual device contexts and power redundancy
Network security - internet DMZ design support including advanced firewall experience and experience with tier one service provider networks, Palo Alto Firewall, F5 Web Application Firewall, Cloudflare Web Application Firewall
Network diagnostics - expert protocol/packet analyzer Sniffer/SNORT experience, expert Netflow and performance analysis experience
Application load balancing - expert application load balancing experience for performance optimization and highly available environments
Advanced Certification or demonstrate equivalent knowledge Advanced knowledge of current technologies, tools, applications, and vendors.
Effective oral and written communication skills. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
