What is the difference between Network Engineer Internship vs Network Administrator?
| Aspect | Network Engineer Internship | Network Administrator |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically pursuing or recent graduate in IT or related field | Relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+ often preferred |
| Work Environment | Internship setting, learning-focused, supervised by senior staff | Full-time role managing network operations, troubleshooting, and maintenance |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Internship programs in tech companies, telecom, or IT departments | Businesses, organizations, and service providers managing networks |
The main difference is that a Network Engineer Internship is an entry-level, learning position designed for students or recent graduates, while a Network Administrator is a full-time role responsible for ongoing network management and troubleshooting. Internships provide hands-on experience, whereas administrators handle daily network operations.

These systems are critical to ensuring safe and reliable electric grid operations.
The role requires foundational knowledge of hardware and software systems, T&D operations, networking, and cybersecurity, with exposure to power system modeling and remote field devices. The engineer will work with both modern and legacy technologies while supporting the AES Digital Strategy.
Key Responsibilities:

- Support the development and maintenance of data models for ADMS power system applications.
- Help configure and support advanced applications such as Distribution Power Flow (DPF), Fault Location, Isolation & Service Restoration (FLISR), and Volt/VAR Control (VVC).
- Collaborate on integrating Geographic Information System (GIS) data into ADMS by supporting data extraction, translation, and loading processes.
- Provide support for daily operations of OT systems used by T&D field teams, engineering, planning, reporting, and dispatch.
- Assist in troubleshooting issues and escalating complex problems to senior engineers as needed.
- Work with cross-functional teams to support OT applications and improve system performance.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and contribute to process improvements through technology.
- Support documentation efforts, including diagrams of current and future OT architectures.
- Participate in testing, deployment, and validation of system updates and enhancements.
- Stay informed on applicable regulations and support compliance activities.
- Participate in the OT team's on-call rotation (as required, typically with supervision during initial period).
- Support vendor coordination and assist in evaluating tools and solutions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (preferred ABET-accredited institution).
- 1-3 years of relevant experience (internships or academic projects in power systems or OT are a plus).
- Basic understanding of power systems, SCADA, or industrial control systems.
- Foundational knowledge of hardware, software, and networking concepts.
- Interest in learning about real-time T&D control systems and OT environments.
