What is a network consultant?

A network consultant is an IT specialist who works with business to design, maintain, implement, or improve their computer network. Job duties may include installing or upgrading computers to work on a specific network, troubleshooting user problems with the network or hardware, providing IT support for customers, and training users how to use new systems or software. A network consultant also advises management on how to increase or maintain security over networks and works closely with other network administrators and security experts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Consultant, you need deep knowledge of networking protocols, network design, and troubleshooting, usually backed by a degree in computer science or IT and relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA/CCNP. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, firewalls, routers, switches, and cloud networking platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple clients make someone stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring secure, reliable network infrastructures and delivering effective solutions to diverse business needs.

What are some common challenges network consultants face when working with clients during large-scale network upgrades?

Network Consultants often encounter challenges such as managing legacy systems, ensuring minimal downtime during transitions, and aligning client expectations with technical realities. Coordinating with diverse IT teams and third-party vendors can add complexity, especially when balancing security, scalability, and budget constraints. Successful consultants use strong communication and project management skills to navigate these issues, ensuring that upgrades are completed smoothly and align with the client's long-term goals.

What is the difference between Network Consultant vs Network Engineer?

Employer & Industry UsageConsulting companies, telecom, IT servicesCorporations, service providers, government agencies

While both roles require networking certifications and involve working with network infrastructure, Network Consultants primarily focus on advising clients, designing solutions, and providing strategic guidance. Network Engineers are more involved in the hands-on implementation, configuration, and maintenance of network systems. The roles often overlap, but the key difference lies in consulting versus technical execution.

Is networking a high paying job?

Network consultants often earn competitive salaries, especially with experience, certifications like Cisco or CompTIA, and expertise in network security and infrastructure. Salaries vary by location and industry, but networking roles generally offer strong compensation compared to many other IT positions.

Job description

What We Need

NetBrain is looking for a seasoned network automation leaderย who'sย ready to trade individual troubleshooting wins for enterprise-wide transformation.ย In this role, you'll sit at the intersection of enterprise networking, automation, and business strategyย byย leading executive workshops, translating operational pain points into automation roadmaps, and advising some of the world's largest organizations on how to run their networks smarter, faster, and with far less manual effort.ย ย

This is a role for someoneย who'sย spent years deep in routing, switching, and multi-vendorย architecturesย but has grown into a trusted advisor. You areย asย comfortableย whiteboarding with a CIO as they are reviewing a runbook design with an engineer. If you want your technical depth to drive business outcomes, build lasting customer relationships, and shape whereย NetBrain'sย product goes next, keep reading for more details.ย

What You'll Do

Customer Workshops and Strategic Consultingย

  • Plan andย facilitateย onsite and virtual customer workshops with executives, network leaders, architects, and operations teams to surface priorities, pain points, and automation opportunities.
  • Translate business objectives into prioritized NetBrain use cases, automation strategies, and phased maturity roadmaps.
  • Build stakeholder consensus on automation priorities, ownership, and governance.
  • Deliver executive-level readouts summarizing findings, recommendations, and next steps.ย

ย Business Value and Adoptionย

  • Identifyย opportunities for NetBrain to reduce operational effort, accelerate troubleshooting, and strengthen compliance;ย establishย value hypotheses and success criteria.
  • Quantify business outcomes (hours saved, MTTR improvement, change-risk reduction, tool consolidation) and prioritize use cases by impact, feasibility, and readiness.
  • Develop customer-specific adoption and value realization plans; conduct periodic value reviews and recommend roadmap adjustments.
  • Document customer success stories and promote broader adoption of NetBrain capabilities across teams.ย

Network Automation and Technical Advisoryย

  • Assess network operations processes and define requirements for runbooks, network intents, dashboards, and automation workflows covering troubleshooting, incident response, change validation, and compliance.
  • Provideย architectural guidance for automation across complex, multi-vendor environments; review designs for scalability, security, and alignment withย objectives.
  • Collaborate with NetBrain architects and engineers to translate workshop outcomes into technical requirements, including pre/post-change validation, continuous assessments, and closed-loop remediation.ย
  • Advise onย integrations with ITSM, monitoring, and observability platforms; stay current on emerging automation and AI technologies.ย

Customer Engagement and Program Leadershipย

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to customer technology leaders; build relationships with sponsors, champions, and stakeholders.
  • Define governance, roles, and operating models for automation programs; identifyย and help resolveย adoptionย risks and organizational barriers.
  • Maintain clear documentation of findings, decisions, and commitments; partner with Customer Success, Professional Services, Sales, Solution Engineering, and Product to deliver a coordinatedย experience.
  • Provide structured feedback toย Product and Engineering on customer needs and market trends.ย

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience, plus 8+ years in enterprise networking, network operations, network automation, or infrastructure consulting, including direct experience in a large enterprise environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead customer workshops, discovery sessions, or strategic planning engagements, translating technical topics into business language for audiences ranging from engineers to executives.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills; able to manage multiple engagements independently while collaborating with global, cross-functional teams; willing to travel to customer sites for multi-day workshops (see Travel and Work Environment).
  • Should have experience in several of the following areas:
    • Enterprise network architectures and protocols across multi-vendor environments: routing/switching, TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, VPNs, VLANs; firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco, Fortinet, Check Point, Juniper); load balancing (F5); wireless (Cisco, Aruba, Juniper Mist); data center (Cisco ACI/Nexus, Arista, VMware NSX); SD-WAN; and public cloud networking (Azure, AWS, GCP).
    • Network configuration management, compliance, vulnerability, and lifecycle management; monitoring, observability, and telemetry platforms; ITSM platforms (e.g., ServiceNow).
    • Automation and integration technologies: REST APIs, JSON/XML/YAML, NETCONF/RESTCONF/YANG, Python, Ansible, PowerShell, Terraform, Git, CI/CD, and experience building automated diagnostics, health checks, or remediation workflows.
    • This role does not require full-time software development, but candidates must understand automation design principles and work effectively with automation engineers and architects.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40-50% within your territory as required.
  • Manual Dexterity: Repetitive motion of wrists, hands and fingers for using a computer.
  • Stationary Tasks: Sitting for extended periods, remaining in a stationary position.

Preferredย Expertiseย

  • Previousย experience with the NetBrain platform (Dynamic Maps, Path Analysis, Runbooks, Network Intents, Preventive Automation, Golden Assessments).
  • Background as a network architect, senior network engineer, automation engineer, infrastructure consultant, or operations leader, including building or leading an automation program or center of excellence.
  • Management or technology consulting/customer advisory experience - business cases, ROI analyses, executive presentations - plus familiarity with AI applications in network operations and ITIL practices.
  • Relevant certifications (CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP, JNCIE, PCNSE, AWS, Azure, ITIL, or equivalent) and experience with global customers and distributed teams.ย
