Position Summary
As part of the ITS Network Services Team, the Network Engineer II reports to the Senior Network Manager and shares the responsibility for designing, developing and maintaining the physical infrastructure of the University's networking environment. The networking environment provides service for wired and wireless data connectivity, cable TV services, audio-visual network, residential network, environmental services, access control systems and camera systems. The Network Engineer will contribute to the implementation and maintenance of these networks by performing installation of network equipment, remediation of network issues and proactively managing network components. This position requires the individual to participate in on-call responsibilities and scheduled weekend maintenance work as required. To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the employee may be required to work outside their regular working hours as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Implement and troubleshoot network infrastructure solutions; Monitor and troubleshoot network performance issues; Perform regular maintenance and upgrades on network hardware and software; Install, configure, and maintain network equipment (routers, switches, etc.);Diagnose and resolve network-related issues; Provide second and third-tier technical support.
  • Management of core network servers, firewalls, VPN services, network appliances, load balancers, storage area networks, backup solutions and other network devices; Set up and manage services like cable TV, AV systems, and security networks.
  • Collaborate with IT teams and other departments for seamless system integration; Manage 3rd party and other department server/software.
  • Maintain up-to-date network documentation.
  • Coordinate with vendors for hardware/software delivery and troubleshooting.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education - A two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or 18 months to four years of work experience in a related field.
  • Experience - Six months to two years (Equivalent combination of Education and Employment).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience in designing, configuring, deploying and troubleshooting enterprise wired and wireless networks.
  • Experience with converged networks, software and hardware in a routing and switching environment as well as quality-of-service including voice, VOIP, audio-visual, access control and security solutions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and familiarity with common layer 2 and 3 protocols, IP, DNS, DHCP, unicast and multicast, spanning tree protocol, BICSI and other network standards.
  • Experience with a wide range of client platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android and Unix-like environments including various flavors of Linux.
  • Excellent written, verbal, organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in working both alone and collaboratively.
  • Ability to learn new technologies beyond core area of knowledge.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, promptly and professionally with colleagues and involved senior management is required.

Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Work Environment
Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
