What does a Network Automation Engineer Intern do?

A Network Automation Engineer Intern assists with automating network operations and processes using programming and scripting languages. Their responsibilities often include writing scripts to configure network devices, testing automation solutions, and working alongside senior engineers to optimize network performance. Interns also learn about network protocols, monitoring tools, and best practices in network security. The role offers hands-on experience in both networking and software development, preparing interns for advanced roles in network engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Network Automation Engineer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Automation Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, scripting languages (such as Python), and progress toward a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automation tools like Ansible, REST APIs, and version control systems such as Git is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, a collaborative mindset, and effective communication skills help interns excel in dynamic team environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently automating network tasks, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to modern, scalable network infrastructures.

What types of projects and technologies can a Network Automation Engineer Intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a Network Automation Engineer Intern, you will typically assist with automating network configurations, troubleshooting, and monitoring tasks using tools like Python, Ansible, and network simulation platforms. Interns often collaborate with senior engineers to develop or improve scripts that streamline network operations and enhance reliability. You may also participate in team meetings to discuss automation strategies and gain exposure to real-world networking environments, which is invaluable for building hands-on experience and understanding industry best practices.

What is the difference between Network Automation Engineer Intern vs Network Engineer Intern?

Job description

Lead Network Automation Engineer

Wells Fargo is back in the office, three days a week collaborating for fabulous outcomes!

This role has no visa sponsorship or visa transfers.

At Wells Fargo, we're redefining enterprise networking for scale, resilience, and automation-and we're looking for a Lead Network Engineer who wants to build what's next, not just maintain what exists.

This is not a traditional network engineering role-and not a pure DevOps position. We're looking for engineers who understand network protocols deeply and write code to automate infrastructure-people who are as comfortable with BGP and OSPF as they are with Python, APIs, and infrastructure as code. This role is built for those who don't just configure networks, but automate and evolve them at scale. If your experience is limited to networking without automation, or DevOps work without hands-on network protocol depth, this role will not be the right fit.

This is a high-impact role for an engineer who lives at the intersection of network, dev ops and automation, with the ability to influence strategy while still getting hands-on with modern tooling like Python, Ansible, and CI/CD.

You'll take ownership of a forward-looking automation roadmap, shape how network infrastructure is engineered across access environments, and lead initiatives that drive measurable improvements in reliability, security, and operational efficiency. I

Automation & Engineering Leadership
  • Lead the design and deployment of scalable automation frameworks using Ansible, Python, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Integrate and extend Nautobot (or similar platforms) as a network source-of-truth and automation engine
  • Utilize GitHub Copilot and modern tooling to accelerate development and improve engineering efficiency
  • Maintain and execute the network automation roadmap, ensuring timely delivery of strategic initiatives
Network Design & Operations
  • Design, review, and guide High-Level and Low-Level Designs (HLD/LLD) for both automated and traditional network solutions
  • Lead complex implementations, upgrades, migrations, and configurations across Access and Data Center environments
  • Support and engineer on Cisco and Arista platforms (ISR, ASR, Catalyst) and enterprise network ecosystems
  • Drive remote end-user network access capabilities and improvements
Troubleshooting & Reliability
  • Diagnose and resolve complex network issues using diagnostic, simulation, and automation tools
  • Monitor performance trends and recommend improvements across hardware and software lifecycle
  • Identify gaps in processes and implement automation to meet Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
Security, Risk & Compliance
  • Design and implement secure, compliant network solutions aligned with regulatory and enterprise standards
  • Assess and manage risk of changes to production systems, ensuring quality and compliance
  • Perform secure implementation of network changes through automated pipelines
Collaboration & Strategy
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align network and automation initiatives with business goals
  • Lead technical discussions and mentor engineers in both networking and automation best practices
  • Provide implementation guidance, including support outside standard business hours when required
Required Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of Network Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 5+ years of Infrastructure Automation experience
  • 5+ years of Python scripting and Ansible automation development
  • 3+ years of experience with GitHub Actions, GitHub Copilot, CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Routing & Switching (BGP, WAN, ISP interconnects)
    • WLAN, MPLS, IPT, DNS/DHCP/IPAM (DDI)
    • SD-WAN control plane and overlay networks
  • Experience working with Linux environments
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex distributed systems
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with Nautobot or similar network automation platforms
  • Experience with:
    • Cisco SD-WAN
    • Meraki SD-Branch
  • Familiarity with Agile and DevOps methodologies
  • Certifications such as:
    • CCNP, CCIE, DevNet, or Data Center certifications
  • Experience with automation tools (Ansible, GitHub, CI/CD frameworks)
  • Certification or exposure to Automation or Generative AI (GenAI)
Job Expectations:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using AIassisted development and analysis tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot and approved codecentric agents)
  • Leverage AI to accelerate system design, coding, testing, analysis, and troubleshooting
  • Apply strong technical judgment when validating and integrating AIassisted outputs into solutions
  • Understand and account for model limitations, security risks, and operational considerations
  • Apply AI responsibly in development and production environments
  • Ensure AI usage aligns with security, compliance, privacy, and ethical standards
