Positional Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Structural Engineering Lead to oversee and grow its structural engineering practice within a multidisciplinary consulting engineering environment.
This leadership role combines technical expertise, project management, client relationship management, and team development responsibilities. The successful candidate will serve as the primary structural engineering leader for the Buffalo office, providing technical oversight, mentoring engineering staff, managing project execution, and supporting business growth initiatives.
The Structural Engineering Lead will be responsible for guiding a team of structural engineers and designers while collaborating closely with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, architectural, and construction teams to deliver innovative building design solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects.
This position is ideal for a seasoned structural engineer who enjoys balancing hands-on engineering work with leadership responsibilities and is interested in helping shape the future growth and direction of a structural engineering department.
Role & Responsibility:
Tasks That Will Lead To Your Success
  • Serve as the senior structural engineering leader within the Buffalo office.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to structural engineering staff.
  • Support the professional development of junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Assist with workload planning, resource allocation, and project prioritization.
  • Foster collaboration across structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and architectural disciplines.
  • Participate in recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and developing engineering talent.
  • Help establish and maintain engineering standards, best practices, and quality control procedures.
  • Support the long-term growth and strategic direction of the structural engineering group.
Structural Engineering & Design
  • Lead the design and analysis of structural systems for new construction, renovation, rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse projects.
  • Develop structural concepts and cost-effective engineering solutions for a variety of building types.
  • Perform and review structural calculations, analyses, and engineering documentation.
  • Prepare and oversee construction documents, including:
    • Drawings
    • Specifications
    • Design calculations
    • Technical reports
  • Review structural designs prepared by team members for technical accuracy and constructability.
  • Coordinate structural systems with other engineering disciplines and architectural teams.
  • Utilize industry-standard structural analysis and design software.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support investigations, assessments, and evaluations of existing structures.
  • Prepare engineering reports documenting findings, recommendations, and design solutions.
Project Management
  • Serve as Project Manager and/or Lead Engineer on complex building projects.
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, staffing, and deliverables.
  • Monitor project profitability and resource utilization.
  • Coordinate project activities with internal teams, clients, contractors, and consultants.
  • Maintain project quality standards and ensure successful project execution.
  • Support bidding, procurement, and construction administration activities.
  • Review shop drawings, product submittals, RFIs, and contractor inquiries.
  • Participate in construction observation and site visits as needed.
Client Management & Business Development
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients throughout project lifecycles.
  • Support proposal development and business development initiatives.
  • Assist in identifying new project opportunities and expanding client relationships.
  • Participate in client presentations, project interviews, and strategic planning discussions.
  • Represent the organization within the engineering and construction community.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering focus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required or ability to obtain reciprocity in New York State.
  • 15+ years of structural engineering experience within a consulting engineering environment.
  • Demonstrated experience designing building structures (non-bridge structures).
  • Prior leadership, mentoring, or management experience.
  • Strong project management experience overseeing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software.
  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Engineering Documentation Practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships and lead multidisciplinary project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Structural Engineering (SE) License.

Work Schedule & Travel
