Job description

The Nerve Conduction Study Technician, also referred to as a Nerve Conduction Technologist or NCV/NCS Technician, performs high-quality nerve conduction studies under the direction and supervision of a neurologist, physiatrist, or other qualified physician experienced in electrodiagnostic medicine. The technician is responsible for preparing patients, obtaining accurate technical recordings, maintaining electrodiagnostic equipment, documenting study data, and supporting efficient clinic workflow.


This position requires technical proficiency, attention to detail, excellent patient communication skills, and a strong understanding of patient safety, infection control, confidentiality, and the clinical purpose of electrodiagnostic testing. The technician does not independently interpret nerve conduction studies or establish diagnoses. Final interpretation and clinical correlation are the responsibility of the supervising physician.


Patient Preparation and Communication
• Prepare patients for nerve conduction studies by explaining the procedure in a clear, compassionate, and professional manner.
• Review the physician order, indication for testing, relevant medical history, symptoms, limb temperature considerations, prior studies when available, and any patient-specific factors that may affect testing.
• Confirm patient identity using approved clinic procedures and ensure appropriate consent or acknowledgment of the procedure according to clinic policy.
• Assess patient comfort, mobility limitations, anxiety, pain sensitivity, skin integrity, implanted devices, anticoagulation status when relevant, and other clinical considerations that may affect the testing process.
• Position patients appropriately for upper-extremity, lower-extremity, cranial nerve, repetitive stimulation, late response, or other ordered nerve conduction protocols.
• Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and comfort throughout the procedure.
Technical Performance of Nerve Conduction Studies
• Perform nerve conduction studies in accordance with physician orders, established laboratory protocols, payer requirements when applicable, and professional standards for electrodiagnostic testing.
• Accurately place stimulating, recording, reference, and ground electrodes using appropriate anatomic landmarks and standard measurement techniques.
• Obtain technically reliable motor, sensory, mixed nerve, F-wave, H-reflex, repetitive nerve stimulation, and other nerve conduction responses as directed by the supervising physician and clinic protocols.
• Measure and record latencies, amplitudes, conduction velocities, distances, temperatures, waveforms, side-to-side comparisons, and other technical parameters required for physician review.
• Adjust technique as needed to optimize signal quality, reduce artifact, and obtain reproducible waveforms.
• Recognize common technical problems, including poor electrode contact, excessive impedance, electrical interference, movement artifact, suboptimal stimulation, temperature effects, volume conduction, anomalous responses, and equipment malfunction.
• Communicate with the supervising physician during the study when findings suggest that additional testing, protocol modification, or physician assessment may be needed.
• Assist the physician during the electrodiagnostic encounter, including preparation for needle EMG when appropriate, while remaining within the technician’s authorized scope of duties.
Documentation and Data Management
• Accurately label and save all waveforms, measurements, test conditions, limb temperatures, technical comments, and study data for physician review and interpretation.
• Document the technical portion of the study in the electronic medical record or electrodiagnostic software according to clinic policy.
• Ensure that reports, waveforms, and study files are complete, organized, and available to the interpreting physician.
• Maintain accurate patient records while complying with HIPAA and all applicable confidentiality requirements.
• Notify the physician or clinic leadership of incomplete studies, patient intolerance, adverse reactions, technical limitations, or other issues that may affect interpretation.
Equipment, Supplies, and Laboratory Maintenance
• Operate, calibrate, clean, disinfect, and maintain EMG/NCS equipment, electrodes, stimulators, cables, temperature probes, carts, computers, and related accessories according to manufacturer instructions and clinic policy.
• Perform routine quality checks to ensure equipment safety and reliable recordings.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and report equipment problems, software issues, electrical interference, or supply shortages.
• Maintain adequate inventory of disposable electrodes, alcohol wipes, gauze, tape, measuring tools, skin preparation supplies, gloves, disinfectants, and other testing materials.
• Prepare, clean, and turn over examination rooms between patients according to infection control and clinic safety standards.
Patient Safety, Compliance, and Professional Conduct
• Follow all clinic policies related to patient safety, infection prevention, equipment safety, emergency response, documentation, privacy, and professional conduct.
• Monitor patients throughout the procedure for discomfort, vasovagal symptoms, anxiety, pain, skin irritation, or other adverse reactions, and respond appropriately.
• Maintain a calm, professional, and reassuring manner with patients who may be anxious, medically complex, disabled, or in pain.
• Communicate respectfully and effectively with patients, families, physicians, residents, medical assistants, front-office staff, and clinic leadership.
• Participate in quality improvement activities, protocol review, equipment updates, continuing education, and training related to nerve conduction studies and electrodiagnostic medicine.
• Support the educational mission of the clinic by assisting residents, fellows, or trainees in understanding the technical workflow of nerve conduction studies, when appropriate and as directed by faculty.


Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Ideally, a minimum of two years of experience performing nerve conduction studies, EMG/NCS technical support, or closely related neurodiagnostic testing.
• Demonstrated ability to perform technically reliable upper- and lower-extremity nerve conduction studies.
• Knowledge of peripheral nerve anatomy, electrode placement, stimulation techniques, waveform acquisition, artifact reduction, and basic electrodiagnostic terminology.
• Ability to work under physician supervision and follow established protocols while recognizing when physician input is needed.
• Ability to work with learners, including resident physicians and medical students.
• Familiarity with EMG/NCS equipment, electrodiagnostic software, electronic medical records, and routine equipment troubleshooting.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to provide compassionate care to patients with neurologic, neuromuscular, orthopedic, pain, or functional limitations.
• Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
• Current Basic Life Support certification preferred or required within a defined period after hire.


Preferred Qualifications
• Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist certification through the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine preferred.
• Ideally, prior experience in a neurology, physiatry, neuromuscular medicine, academic medicine, or electrodiagnostic laboratory setting.
• Experience assisting with studies for carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, radiculopathy, plexopathy, peripheral neuropathy, mononeuropathy multiplex, motor neuron disease, myopathy, neuromuscular junction disorders, and entrapment neuropathies.
• Experience with repetitive nerve stimulation, F-waves, H-reflexes, temperature monitoring, and complex multi-limb studies.
• Experience working with residents, fellows, or other trainees in an academic clinical setting.
• Bilingual ability preferred but not mandatory, depending on clinic patient population.


Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, sit, walk, bend, and position patients during testing.
• Ability to assist patients with limited mobility, using appropriate safety techniques and clinic protocols.
