How much do ndt testing jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for ndt testing in the United States is $29.68, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.08 and $34.38 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by NDT Testing professionals, and how can they be addressed?

NDT Testing professionals often encounter challenges such as working in confined or hazardous environments, interpreting ambiguous test results, and ensuring strict adherence to safety and quality standards. To address these, it's important to stay up-to-date with the latest testing technologies, maintain clear communication with engineering and safety teams, and participate in ongoing training. Many companies also support NDT technicians through mentorship and peer review systems, fostering collaborative problem-solving and continuous improvement.

What is NDT testing?

NDT testing, or Non-Destructive Testing, refers to a range of techniques used to evaluate the properties of materials, components, or structures without causing damage. These methods are commonly used to detect flaws, measure thickness, and assess the integrity of products in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, construction, and oil and gas. NDT ensures safety and reliability by identifying defects early, which helps prevent failures and reduces maintenance costs. Some common NDT methods include ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, magnetic particle testing, and dye penetrant testing.

How much does NDT get paid?

NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) technicians typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Certified NDT professionals with advanced skills and certifications like ASNT Level III can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $80,000. Compensation also varies based on the industry, work environment, and whether the role involves travel or shift work.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

In NDT testing, high-paying roles such as senior inspectors, project managers, or specialized technicians can earn around $2,000 per day, especially with extensive experience, certifications like ASNT Level III, and working on large industrial or offshore projects. These positions often require advanced skills, safety training, and the ability to work in challenging environments, sometimes involving overtime or travel. Such high daily rates are typically associated with contract or consulting work in the industry.

What are the 4 types of NDT?

NDT testing includes four main types: visual testing (VT), ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), and magnetic particle testing (MT). These methods are used by NDT technicians to detect flaws and ensure the integrity of materials and structures, often requiring specialized training and certification. Each type is suited for different materials and inspection needs in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, and oil and gas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NDT Testing Technician, you need a strong understanding of materials science, defect recognition, and technical standards, typically supported by certifications such as ASNT Level I, II, or III. Proficiency with inspection tools like ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and dye penetrant testing equipment is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help ensure accurate assessments and safety compliance. These skills are crucial for detecting flaws without damaging materials, ensuring structural integrity, and upholding industry standards.

Is Ndt testing a good career?

NDT testing is a stable career that involves inspecting materials and structures for defects using techniques like ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic testing. It often requires certifications such as ASNT and offers opportunities in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, and energy, with potential for advancement and good job security.

What is the difference between Ndt Testing vs Welding Inspection?

AspectNdt TestingWelding Inspection
CertificationsASNT, PCN, SNT-TC-1ACWI, CWE, AWS
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, manufacturing, oil & gasConstruction sites, fabrication shops, industrial facilities
Industry UsageQuality control, safety, maintenanceWeld quality assurance, code compliance

Both Ndt Testing and Welding Inspection require specialized certifications and are used in industrial settings. Ndt Testing focuses on non-destructive evaluation of materials and components, while Welding Inspection ensures welds meet quality standards. They often work together in quality assurance processes but serve distinct roles within the industry.
