What are some common challenges faced by NDT Civil Engineering professionals when working on construction sites?

NDT Civil Engineering professionals often encounter challenges such as varying weather conditions, limited site accessibility, and the need to coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including project managers and contractors. Ensuring accurate and reliable test results while adhering to strict safety protocols can be demanding, especially when working with heavy machinery or at heights. Additionally, professionals must stay updated on the latest NDT technologies and standards to effectively assess the integrity of materials and structures in diverse environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NDT Civil Engineering professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NDT Civil Engineering professional, you need a solid understanding of materials science, structural analysis, and non-destructive testing methods, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree and NDT certification (such as ASNT Level II or III). Familiarity with testing tools like ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and eddy current equipment is essential, along with proficiency in interpreting technical codes and standards. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for accurate testing and reporting. These competencies ensure the safety, reliability, and compliance of civil structures by enabling precise flaw detection and clear documentation.

What is the difference between Ndt Civil Engineering vs Civil Engineering Technician?

AspectNdt Civil EngineeringCivil Engineering Technician
CertificationsTypically requires NDT certifications (e.g., ASNT, AWS)Usually requires an associate degree or technical certification
Work EnvironmentField inspections, testing sites, construction projectsDesign, testing, and field support in construction projects
Industry UsageUsed in quality control, safety inspections, material testingInvolved in project support, site inspections, and drafting

While both roles work within civil engineering projects, Ndt Civil Engineering focuses on non-destructive testing and quality assurance, requiring specialized certifications. Civil Engineering Technicians support project execution through technical tasks and site inspections. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What is NDT in civil engineering?

NDT, or Non-Destructive Testing, in civil engineering refers to a range of techniques used to evaluate the properties and integrity of materials, structures, or components without causing any damage. These methods are commonly used to assess concrete, steel, and other construction materials for defects or deterioration. NDT helps ensure safety, quality, and compliance with standards while extending the lifespan of structures by detecting issues early. Common NDT methods in civil engineering include ultrasonic testing, radiography, and ground-penetrating radar.

NDT/NDE Technician
Requisition Number: 2026-1050-11
S&ME is looking for an experienced technician ready to take your career to new heights as an NDT/NDE Technician on our Metals team out of Raleigh, North Carolina. With no two days alike, you'll build skills that matter and leave your mark on the safety of the structures that shape our community.
As an NDT/NDE Technician, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the structural integrity and safety of our projects by visually inspecting structural steel, including bolted and welded connections. You'll be engaged in fieldwork that may involve safely climbing steel structures such as buildings, cell phone towers, and water tanks to heights exceeding 200 feet, using fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems.
Your Day-to-Day:
  • Inspection and Non-Destructive Testing: Conduct thorough inspections and utilize non-destructive testing methods to maintain impeccable quality standards. A significant portion of field inspection time is spent performing non-destructive testing (NDT) duties such as ultrasonic inspection (UT) of welds and/or magnetic particle testing (MT) of welds.
  • Project Testing Assignments: Juggle testing assignments across projects, contributing to the success of each endeavor.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Calibration: Maintain testing equipment in working order and calibration; can include managing field and laboratory equipment inventories, formal calibration records, and participating in quality systems audits.
  • Report Creation: Craft detailed reports to effectively communicate findings.

This position may require working 50+ hours per week (during periods of peak workload), as well as off-shift and weekend work, as needed. Experience in Safety, DDC, NDT, and Radiation Training, including the use of fall protection equipment and personal fall arrest systems, is a plus.
What You Bring:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of NDT/NDE metals testing experience OR an associate degree in a closely related field
  • Active industry-related certifications:
    • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification or working towards it
    • Achievement of ASNT Level II certification per ASNT-SNT-TC-1A in at least one method
    • Additional certifications, a plus:
      • ICC certification in Building Inspections and/or Structural Steel Inspection
      • Level II for UT, PT, MT certifications

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:
  • Working the majority of the time outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Climbing heights over 200 feet
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. of materials and equipment
  • Safely handling field tools and maneuvering equipment on active construction sites
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise
