The Coaching Analyst position is responsible for supporting the integration of analytics into the day-to-day functioning of the coaching staff, as well as assisting Basketball Operations as a whole. The focus of this is developing and implementing analytical tools and analysis for the coaching staff, along with providing ad hoc analysis. As an advocate for analytics throughout Basketball Operations, provide an enthusiastic, process-driven, and innovative approach to promoting and developing the team's analytical capabilities.
Who You Are:
  • Strong analytical skills, including an understanding of how to interpret basketball needs and then translate them into statistical analyses.
  • Familiar with basic statistical analysis techniques (e.g., regression/modeling, hypothesis testing, categorical data analysis)
  • Working knowledge of SQL and database design
  • Demonstrate moderate-to-advanced knowledge, skill, and expertise in Python, R, and/or other tools used for data analysis
  • Knowledge of data visualization with the ability to develop graphics
  • Working knowledge of the NBA, the NBA rules & regulations
  • Knowledge of advanced basketball statistics, and common basketball statistical resources, both public and proprietary
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with staff possessing varying levels of quantitative background, such as management, coaches, medical staff, and athletes
  • Have strong organizational skills, with a robust attention to detail, in regards both to checking and working with data, as well as visual presentation of deliverables and reports
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be punctual and accountable daily
  • Must be trustworthy and have a positive attitude
  • Must be available for a high volume of non-traditional work hours, weekend and holiday work, and 40+ hours/week and travel.

What You'll Do:
  • Leverage analytical skills and knowledge of advanced basketball statistics to interpret basketball needs and translate them into statistical processes.
  • Partner with the coaching staff in analysis of team and basketball philosophy, including optimizing player development, player performance, lineups, and overall scheme-related strategy.
  • Work with coaching staff on game-by-game analysis of opponents, including pre-game scouting, in- game adjustments, and post-game review.
  • Collaborate with Manager of Coaching Analytics and the broader Basketball Operations Analytics department to ensure alignment across analysis methodologies, reporting, tools and data infrastructure.
  • Perform ad hoc data mining on large volumes of basketball-related data as requests arise, via SQL, Python, R, or other statistical tools.
  • Develop and implement basketball studies related to game strategy.
  • Implement processes for regularly communicating statistical findings to coaches and staff.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
