Who We Are:
Inversion builds advanced reentry systems to deliver next-generation capabilities from space.
Our mission is to make Earth radically more accessible by turning Low-Earth Orbit into an on-demand logistics domain. We see space not as a destination, but as a platform - one that unlocks unprecedented speed and global reach.
Our spacecraft are designed to deliver payloads anywhere on Earth in under an hour, operating through extreme reentry conditions and landing with high precision. These systems open the door to new ways of testing, delivering, and operating at hypersonic speeds.
Inherently dual-use, our technology is built to meet urgent national security needs while laying the groundwork for future commercial applications. Backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, and working with partners such as the U.S. Space Force and NASA, Inversion is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in space-based defense and logistics.
What You'll Doย
As aย Structuresย Engineerย IIย at Inversion, you willย ownย cradle to graveย development ofย primary and secondary structuresย on one of the most capable reentry vehicles ever developed.ย You'llย driveย primary structure design for a novel reentry vehicleย working closely with cross-functional teams to solve complex packaging and manufacturability problems while driving designs toward real hardware.ย
This is a unique opportunity toย own primary structure design of a new aerospace vehicle fromย initialย concept through qualification and production.ย You will be a key member of theย Mechanicalย team, reporting to theย Director of Mechanical.ย
Key Responsibilitiesย
- Lead the design and development ofย primary and secondary vehicle structures,ย including load paths, joints, attachments, and structural interfacesย
- Own structural concept development fromย early architecture through hardware realization, balancing mass efficiency, robustness, manufacturability, and reliabilityย
- Partner closely with analysis engineers to develop and refineย structural sizing approaches, margin strategy, and environmental load assumptionsย
- Drive structural integration across vehicle subsystems, includingย payload, avionics packaging, propulsion interfaces, and deployment/separation systemsย
- Support development ofย TPS-to-structure integration concepts, including attachment approaches, tolerances, and assembly considerationsย
- Generate and reviewย CAD, drawings, and product definitionย needed to release high-quality hardwareย
- Support prototype and flight hardware builds throughย manufacturing coordination, assembly planning, test support, and failure investigationย
- Conduct trade studies and make sound engineering decisions in aย fast-paced, ambiguous development environmentย
- Present design progress, technical risks, and recommended paths forward inย design reviews and cross-functional program forumsย
Required Qualificationsย
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,ย a related field,ย or equivalent technical experienceย
- Typicallyย 2+ years ofย professionalย experienceย developing hardwareย for aerospace, defense, or similarly demanding applicationsย
- Strong mechanical design skills with an emphasis onย structural interfaces, packaging, high-load environments, and mass optimizationย
- Strongย proficiencyย inย 3D CAD softwareย (NX, CATIA,ย Solidworks, or similar)ย
- Familiarityย withย structural analysis toolsย (ANSYS, Abaqus, NASTRAN,ย FEMAP,ย or equivalent)ย with an emphasis onย modal and static structural analysisย
- Proficiencyย inย creating detailedย engineering drawingsย with GD&T and otherย technical documentationย
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skillsย
- Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environmentย
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government Secret/Top Secret security clearance.ย
Desired Qualificationsย
- Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experienceย
- Demonstrated history ofย mechanical design ownership from cradle to graveย
- Experience in the design and test ofย qualified space-flight hardwareย
- Experience withย large metallic structuresย for space, aerospace, defense, or similarly demanding applicationsย
- Experience supportingย prototype builds and rapid design iteration in a hardware-rich environmentย
