We are seeking a Network Operations Engineer to provide Information Technology support to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. The Network Operations Engineer is a member of the Network Operations Team, supporting hardware, software and applications comprising the Network Infrastructure. As a Network Operations Engineer, you'll play a key role supporting hardware, software and applications of the Network Infrastructure.

This job requires a fundamental understanding of Switching, Routing, and the TCP/IP Stack. It includes analyzing, monitoring, troubleshooting, replacing and upgrading of network switches, routers, wireless access points, firewall appliances, Load balancers and other devices. It also includes working with networking tools such as AWS Cloud, Aruba NAC, Cisco DNA Center, EM7, Splunk as well as deep understanding of network protocols like SSH, FTP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP and Switching/Routing protocols. As a Network Operations Engineer, there is a lot of interaction and coordination that goes on with other teams such as the monitoring team, the Help Desk, the SA team and Network Engineering team. Network Operation Engineers also support network upgrades and new product rollouts, which involve configuration management compliance. Also responds to alerts, events, and customer reported issues within stated service level agreements and escalate problems as required to the engineering team and resolve significant matters exercising independent judgment ensuring that JPL Enterprise Tech network security and performance standards are met.

The position will support the JPL Campus Network, Data centers and the Mission/Partner Networks. You'll work closely with mission users and engineering teams to ensure networks are optimized, secure, and ready to support NASA's most critical operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoots network problems and outages, schedule upgrades, and collaborates with network architects and engineers on network optimization.
  • Provides problem resolution support to Helpdesk, IT Operations, end users and missions; resolves matters of significance or escalates as necessary.
  • Evaluates, tests, and documents current network technology baseline for both hardware and software to determine moderate to complex networking needs.
  • In the process of the Delivery to Operations, participates in the testing of the technology to be deployed internally for various networks.
  • Documents and tracks moderate to complex reported matters of significance where assigned; ensure matters have been resolved as appropriate and in accordance with established service agreements or procedures.
  • Install/remove hardware and move equipment on as needed between data centers and Hub rooms.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new solutions and improving resilience of the current environment.
  • Analyze and fix network performance issues utilizing available tools.
  • Troubleshoot network problems and outages, schedule upgrades and collaborate with network architects and engineers on network optimization.
  • Install/remove hardware and move equipment on as needed between data centers and Hub rooms.
  • Undertake data network fault investigations in LAN/WAN environments utilizing various data sources.
  • Upgrading network equipment to latest stable OS releases in coordination with the networking security and engineering teams.
  • Configures and deploys switching, routing and security devices.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting using packet capture tools such as Wireshark.
  • Support Data Center equipment deployment and configurations (Cisco/Juniper/Palo Alto).
  • Troubleshoot day-to-day User related issues starting from basic connectivity all the way to network performance and latency issues.
  • Responsible for handling escalated issues and will respond to outages to specified service metrics.
  • Follow procedures and standards as outlined by JPL policy.
  • Will be a member of the on-call rotation team providing after hours support of a 24x7 network.

Network Infrastructure Support Includes:

  • Cisco and Juniper Networking Switches/Routers (install, configure and maintain).
  • Understanding of Cisco Wireless system (install, configure and maintain).
  • Profound understanding of Palo Alto Firewalls (install, configure and maintain).
  • Experience troubleshooting VPN issues (Global Protect).
  • Fundamental experience with AWS and Load balancers.
  • Understanding of IP Fabric EVPN-VXLAN.
  • Knowledge of Aruba ClearPass NAC.
  • Knowledge of SNOW and JIRA.
  • Knowledge of scripting and automation desired.
  • CCNA and/or JNCIA or higher desired.

Education and Experience:

  • BS in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 9 years of hands-on experience in network administration.
  • Excellent communication skills and a customer-focused mindset.
  • Previous experience supporting NASA JPL IT systems is desired.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain/access onsite at NASA JPL required.
  • US Citizenship required.
