How much do nasa food science jobs pay per hour?
What is a NASA food science?
A NASA Food Science job involves researching and developing safe, nutritious, and long-lasting food for astronauts during space missions. Food scientists at NASA work on optimizing food preservation, packaging, and nutrient content to ensure astronauts maintain health and performance in space. They also study how microgravity affects food and digestion. Their work supports long-duration missions, such as those to the Moon and Mars.
What does a NASA food scientist do?
NASA Food Scientists are responsible for developing and testing food products suitable for long-duration space missions, ensuring nutritional adequacy, safety, and palatability under microgravity conditions. Daily tasks often include conducting laboratory analysis, researching preservation techniques, and working closely with engineers, dietitians, and astronauts to align food solutions with mission requirements. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is a core aspect of the role, as food needs must be integrated with overall life support and mission planning. This environment provides opportunities for innovative problem-solving and exposure to pioneering technologies, making the position both challenging and rewarding.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the NASA food science position?
To thrive as a NASA Food Scientist, you need a strong background in food science, microbiology, chemistry, and a related degree such as a B.S. or M.S. in Food Science or Nutrition. Familiarity with analytical laboratory instruments, food safety certifications like HACCP, and experience using food formulation and preservation systems are highly valuable. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills. These qualifications are crucial for designing safe, nutritious, and long-lasting food products that meet the unique requirements of space missions.

About University of Florida
Sourced by ZipRecruiter
The University of Florida is one of the top ranked public universities in the United States (ranked top 5 amongst public universities in 2023 US news and world report). It is one of only a few comprehensive universities, having medical, veterinary, dental, nursing, public health, and engineering disciplines all co-localized on the same, contiguous campus to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Gainesville is located in the northern region of Florida, within 1-1.5 hours of each coast, and just 1.5-2 hours to Orlando and Tampa. It is a small to medium-sized city with a low cost of living, excellent public and private schools, and southern hospitality. While Gainesville is widely recognized as the home of the Gators, it is quickly becoming known as a center for innovation and a place with a lifestyle that's comfortable for families, yet attractive for young professionals.
