What does a NASA engineer do?

A NASA engineer designs, builds, and tests spacecraft, satellites, rockets, and related technology for aeronautics and space exploration. Their work includes developing innovative solutions to complex technical challenges, collaborating with scientists and other engineers, and ensuring the safety and reliability of missions. NASA engineers may specialize in areas such as aerospace, mechanical, electrical, software, or systems engineering, and often work on projects that push the boundaries of science and technology.

What is the difference between Nasa Engineer vs Aerospace Engineer?

AspectNasa EngineerAerospace Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, often with specialized training in space systemsBachelor's or higher in aerospace or mechanical engineering, with focus on aircraft and spacecraft
Work EnvironmentGovernment space agencies, research labs, mission control centersAircraft manufacturing, aerospace firms, government agencies, research institutions
Employer & IndustryNASA, government space programs, space research organizationsPrivate aerospace companies, defense contractors, government agencies

While both Nasa Engineers and Aerospace Engineers work in the aerospace industry, Nasa Engineers specifically focus on space missions, spacecraft, and research for NASA. Aerospace Engineers have a broader scope, including aircraft design and space systems, often working in commercial or defense sectors. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and technical skills, but their work environments and project focus differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a NASA engineer?

To thrive as a NASA Engineer, you generally need a strong background in engineering or physical sciences, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or advanced degree. Proficiency with specialized software like MATLAB, CAD tools, and familiarity with systems engineering processes is typically required, along with any necessary security clearances. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication set standout candidates apart in collaborative and interdisciplinary environments. These skills are crucial for developing innovative solutions to complex aerospace challenges and ensuring mission success.

What are some common challenges NASA engineers face when working on space missions?

NASA engineers often encounter unique challenges such as designing systems that can withstand extreme space environments, working within strict safety and reliability standards, and solving complex problems with limited resources or time. Collaboration across multidisciplinary teams is crucial, as engineers need to coordinate with scientists, mission planners, and technicians to ensure mission success. Adapting to evolving project requirements and staying updated with cutting-edge technology are also key aspects of the role.

This engineer will design, develop, architect, and configure the Enterprise MAS platform across development, test, stage, and production environments. The role requires exceptional communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate with cross-organizational leadership, technical teams, vendors, center stakeholders, and IT personnel. This individual will document and review system designs in alignment with NASA engineering practices and participate in formal reviews as designated by the NASA Technical Point Of Contact (TPOC). This role requires 8+ years of hands-on Maximo/Maximo Application Suite (MAS) experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serve as the primary functional POC for Maximo Application Suite (MAS) user support,

business process optimization, and configuration management.

• Serve as liaison between business stakeholders, field users, IT teams, and vendors to

ensure MAS solutions align with operational and maintenance needs.

• Monitor and resolve system issues, data inconsistencies, and user access challenges.

• Analyze existing workflows, data collection forms, and business processes across key

Maximo modules (Work Orders, PM/CM, Asset Management).

• Identify opportunities for modernization, optimization, and standardization.

• Maintain system configurations, lookup tables, and workflow logic.

• Support migration of manual or paper-based workflows to modern, mobile-enabled

solutions integrated with Maximo Application Suite.

• Gather requirements directly from NASA customers, field personnel, maintenance staff,

and business leaders.

• Translate requirements into business requirements documents, user stories, process maps,

and configuration specifications.

• Collaborate with developers, architects, and integration teams to ensure enhancements

meet operational needs.

• Review and resolve center-specific configuration differences with focus on standardizing

application structure and configurations across the Enterprise.

• Lead standardization of business and technical requirements across NASA centers.

• Implement standardized release management, including version control, testing, and

controlled promotion of changes across environments.

• Participate in system testing, user validation, and change-management activities for

project rollouts and updates.

• Partner with IT support and vendor resources to resolve system performance or technical

escalations.

• Provide engineering support for the RedHat OpenShift-based MAS container platform.

• Manage system requirements and provide hardware/software updates for evolving

workloads.

• Analyze requirement sets to ensure compliance with reliability, maintainability, and

availability standards.

• Install, integrate, validate, and document MAS components, services, and system

software into a fully operational system.

• Ensure alignment with NASA’s infrastructure, functional, and interface design

requirements.

• Conduct system verification testing and support customer acceptance of delivered

solutions.

• Coordinate with NASA customers, center operations, maintenance, and IT stakeholders

to gather interface requirements and communicate progress.

• Understand hybrid integration between on-premise and cloud systems; determine middleware/API gateway needs.

• Troubleshoot enterprise data discrepancies and integration-related issues.

• Build, test, maintain, and manage API integrations between enterprise systems.

• Ensure data integrity and reliable data flow across systems from requirements through production deployment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

• 8+ years of demonstrated Maximo/MAS experience involving configuration, solution design, and workflow optimization.
