What Does a Nanny Do?

A nanny plays a special role in a child’s life. Nannies are childcare professionals who assist parents with the day-to-day work of caring and raising children and are responsible for the children’s well-being and supportive of their emotional needs. As a nanny, your responsibilities may include preparing meals, dressing and bathing the children, arranging playdates, accompanying children to activities, and helping with schoolwork. Nannies typically work during the parent's work hours, but some families have nannies come early in the morning or stay at night until the kids go to bed. You may also be responsible for dropping off and picking up the kids at school and performing light housework.

What are nannies?

Nannies are childcare professionals who provide personalized care and supervision for children, usually within the family's home. Their responsibilities often include preparing meals, organizing activities, assisting with homework, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children they watch over. Nannies can work full-time, part-time, or live-in, and may also handle light housekeeping related to the children. They play an important role in supporting families by offering reliable and nurturing care tailored to each child's needs.

Search & Comparison IntentLooking for consistent, long-term childcareSeeking occasional or short-term babysitting

In summary, a nanny provides ongoing, long-term childcare with potential certifications and a regular schedule, while a babysitter offers temporary, occasional care without formal credentials. Both roles serve different needs based on the family's requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nanny, you need strong childcare knowledge, first aid/CPR certification, and often experience or training in early childhood development. Familiarity with child safety systems, age-appropriate activities, and sometimes communication apps for parent updates are important technical tools. Patience, reliability, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help nannies build trust and connect with both children and parents. These abilities are vital for ensuring the child's safety, fostering healthy development, and maintaining positive family relationships.

How do nannies typically coordinate with parents to ensure consistent child care routines?

Nannies often maintain open and regular communication with parents to align on daily routines, discipline approaches, and developmental activities for the children. This can involve daily handover notes, shared digital calendars, or scheduled check-ins to discuss the child's progress and any concerns. By working collaboratively, nannies help provide stability for the children and adapt to any changes in family needs or schedules. This partnership is key to delivering high-quality, personalized care and fostering a positive home environment.

Job description

GREENWICH, CT | NEW YORK, NY | SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (PRIMARY) | INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL (UK-BASED) – A highly active, globally-minded family is seeking an exceptional, polished, and education-focused FULL-TIME NANNY to partner in raising their two young daughters (ages 4 and 2) within a dynamic, bi-coastal and international lifestyle. This is a unique opportunity for a candidate who brings a strong understanding of British or UK educational standards, cultural awareness, and a refined, worldly approach to childcare and development.

This family leads a fast-paced, health-conscious, and highly engaged lifestyle, splitting time between Southern California, New York, Connecticut, and occasionally traveling to the United Kingdom. They are seeking a candidate who is equally energetic, adaptable, and intellectually grounded—someone who can keep up physically while also contributing meaningfully to the children’s early education and global perspective. The ideal candidate is articulate, well-educated, and confident in guiding early childhood development with a lens toward London and New York private school standards.

The schedule will typically consist of roughly 45 hours per week, with 9-hour days beginning around 9:00 AM, with flexibility required for evenings, weekends, and travel. This role requires a candidate who is highly adaptable and thrives in a fluid, ever-changing environment. A valid passport is required, and candidates must be fully travel-ready. Dual U.S./U.K. citizenship and/or the ability to work internationally is strongly preferred. The role can be structured as live-in or live-out depending on the right fit, with a strong preference for live-out when in residence.

Responsibilities will center around full child-related care, with a strong emphasis on educational development, structured routines, and intentional engagement. The nanny will be responsible for planning enriching, age-appropriate activities that align with international and UK-based educational philosophies, supporting early learning, language development, and school readiness. The candidate should be confident introducing a broad worldview through play, conversation, and experiences, while also managing day-to-day needs such as meals, schedules, and travel logistics.

This family is deeply active and values health, wellness, and outdoor living. The ideal candidate will be physically fit, confident in swimming, and enthusiastic about engaging the children in outdoor activities and an active lifestyle. A strong understanding of nutrition is important, with comfort preparing fresh, balanced meals using organic, whole-food ingredients. The candidate should be capable in the kitchen and confident supporting a well-rounded, health-conscious environment.

The ideal candidate is intelligent, proactive, and highly capable—someone who brings both structure and sophistication to the role. They are calm yet energetic, worldly, and naturally polished in communication. A background in education, early childhood development, or private academic settings is strongly preferred. Familiarity with British or European educational systems is essential, and additional language skills (such as French) are welcome, though English fluency is required.

Compensation is open and commensurate with experience, with a general range of $40–$45+ per hour gross via payroll for the right candidate. The role includes standard PTO + sick days + paid holidays(TBD).
