Job description

SUMMARY: Coordinates and provides indirect services to patients on a nursing unit. Performs clerical duties that require considerable knowledge of medical terminology and aptitude for computerized information processing. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of a Nurse Manager, Registered Nurse, or designee, who reviews for conformance to established policies and procedures.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS (MERS):

  • High school graduate and/or GED equivalent
  • Completion of a Health Unit Coordinator program -OR- completion of a Nursing Assistant certificate program.
  • One (1) year (2080 hours) experience as a Health Unit Coordinator Trainee at Hurley Medical Center.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, distinctly and effectively, writes neatly and legibly; neat personal appearance.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with personnel, physicians, volunteers, visitors, patients and the public.

NOTE: 

Health Unit Coordinators who complete at least one (1) year as a Hurley Health Unit Coordinator and are certified by the NAHUC on or before December 31, 1998, do not need to recertify in order to maintain their level 118 allocation. Use of the title "Certified" is only permitted for those who maintain current certification as prescribed by the Association's rules and regulations. 

Health Unit Coordinators who complete at least one (1) year as a Hurley Health Unit Coordinator and become certified by the NAHUC on or after January 1, 1999, must maintain current certification, meeting all recertification requirements of the Association in order to maintain their level 118 allocations. Failure to maintain current certification will result in reallocation to Level 116. Health Unit Coordinators/CHUCs who transfer to a non HUC position after 45 days must start over as a HUC Trainee if selected to transfer back in the HUC classification.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Documents and maintains patient records on assigned unit. Transcribes physician orders including medication information and other pertinent data from patient's medical record to EPIC system and appropriate forms.
  2. Inventories, requisitions, receive, and maintain equipment and supplies on unit assigned. Enters stock supply into information system. Requests special orders, additional supplies, and equipment maintenance as needed.
  3. Acts as receptionist in assigned area. Answers telephone courteously. Gives staff, physicians, and visitors prompt and accurate information.
  4. Performs clerical duties for assigned unit. Enters patient information and other pertinent data into computerized information system as required. Completes necessary forms and maintains medical records.
  5. Prepares requests for laboratory, radiology, or other services/treatments as warranted by physician orders. Follows up to ensure requests are received and completed. Obtains data as directed. Notifies appropriate party of results obtained.
  6. Reports staffing and attendance in assigned areas as required.
  7. Processes communications. Maintains bulletin boards. Distributes mail on assigned unit.
  8. Routinely assesses unit to maintain a satisfactory physical environment. Reports problems and needs to appropriate party in timely manner.
  9. Performs other services or errands as directed; e.g., delivers specimens to laboratory, medication orders to pharmacy.
  10. Attends education/developmental programs as assigned.
  11. Assists in orientation of personnel newly assigned to area.
  12. Performs other related duties as required, including new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.
