What is a NAF?

NAF jobs refer to Non-Appropriated Fund positions within the Department of Defense and other government agencies. These jobs are funded by revenue generated from services such as military base recreation, childcare, hospitality, and retail operations, rather than by taxpayer dollars. NAF employees support the morale, welfare, and recreation (MWR) programs for military members and their families. Positions range from entry-level roles to management in areas like food service, fitness centers, and administrative support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a NAF employee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a NAF employee, you generally need relevant experience or education in hospitality, recreation, or business operations, depending on the specific position. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, scheduling software, or food safety certifications is often required for many NAF roles. Excellent customer service, teamwork, and adaptability are valuable soft skills for engaging with patrons and supporting organizational goals. These skills ensure smooth operations, positive guest experiences, and compliance with military community standards.
