POSITION TITLE: Project Engineer

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations

DEPARTMENT: Operations

TYPE: Full time, Exempt

The Project Engineer supports the Project Manager and field staff in the planning, coordination, and execution of construction projects. This role assists with project documentation, scheduling, procurement, cost tracking, subcontractor coordination, and quality control to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget, and in accordance with contract documents.

The Project Engineer works both in the office and on construction sites and plays a key role in communication between project stakeholders including clients, subcontractors, architects, and field personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities and skills required of personnel so classified.

Project Coordination

  • Assist the Project Manager with daily project administration and coordination
  • Maintain project documentation including contracts, drawings, RFIs, submittals, and change orders
  • Review construction drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements
  • Coordinate with team members, subcontractors, suppliers, and field teams to support project progress
  • Tracks all project schedules and the materials coming to site in support of the project and assists in schedule updates

Document Control

  • Manages trade contracts and contract deliverables from contract award through closeout
  • Review, write and track Requests for Information (RFIs) and collaborate with the design team
  • Review shop drawings and submittals before issuing to the design team
  • Manage submittal logs and approvals
  • Maintain current project drawings and revisions
  • Distribute project documentation to internal teams and subcontractors

Cost and Procurement Support

  • Assist with bid package preparation and subcontractor solicitation
  • Manages and tracks cost for scope changes, purchase orders, material deliveries, and subcontractor agreements
  • Support cost control and change order documentation
  • Review monthly pay applications

Field Support

  • Coordinate with the field supervision team on the project site
  • Responsible for managing different components of projects (i.e. doors, frames and hardware, landscaping, furniture, millwork, specialties, etc.)
  • Conduct regular job site visits to monitor progress and quality of work
  • Assist with site logistics planning and coordination
  • Participate in safety meetings and ensure adherence to safety protocols
  • Support field staff with layout coordination, inspections, and issue resolution
  • Document construction progress with reports and photographs

Communication

  • Serve as a liaison between the office, field teams, subcontractors, and clients
  • Participates in project meetings including coordination meetings and progress meetings
  • Attends meetings to coordinate with Trade Partners
  • Provide updates to project stakeholders as requested by Project Manager or department leaders

GENERAL BACKGROUND AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience

  • Associates degree in construction management, engineering technology, or related field, or equivalent professional training and 5 - 7 years of experience in construction project coordination, field engineering, project administration or similar field or Bachelors degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field and 0 - 5 years of experience supporting construction projects in a Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager or similar role

Safety Requirement

  • Completion of OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Training or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Willingness to comply with company and OSHA safety requirements
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses, gloves, steel toe boots, and other specialized equipment as jobs require.
  • Current certifications for First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain

Knowledge/Skills

  • Understanding of construction methods, materials, and processes
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Proficiency with construction management software (e.g. Procure, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, or similar)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The Project Engineer regularly splits time between an office environment and active construction sites. The employee must be able to perform duties in each setting as project needs require:

  • Sit for extended periods and use a computer, phone, and other office equipment
  • Occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift office materials, weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Walk across uneven terrain and active construction areas during site visits
  • Climb ladders, scaffolding, and permanent and temporary stairways as needed
  • Stand or walk for extended periods and navigate partially completed structures
  • Bend, kneel, crouch, and lift materials or equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and be exposed to construction noise, dust and vibration
  • Review documents and construction drawings and communication in person, by phone, or virtually
  • Specialty project locations (such as industrial facilities, healthcare environments, or restricted sites) may involve additional safety requirements or environmental conditions
