Position Purpose

Music is a key passion for the brand and an integral part of the W experience. The music experience is brought to life in our marketing activations, through our digital and social channels, and most important, as part of the guest experience in W Living Rooms/W Lounges around the world. The W Music Curator role provides an opportunity for us to place greater focus on elevating this experience on-property, in an authentic way.

The vibe of our W Living Rooms/W Lounges is a critical part of keeping the energy of the brand alive. Guests arriving and departing or passing through the Living Room are exposed to this energy, and those attending W Happenings experience it first-hand. The associated buzz and word of mouth from the right vibe is an important part of telling the story of the brand, and retaining its attractiveness to guests and developers alike is essential. Music is a key part of the energetic atmosphere of the W Living Room, and having a W Music Curator in place will enable us to deliver the W experience more consistently and most effectively.

Position Scope / Responsibilities

The W Music Curator should have a consistent presence in the hotel, 50% of the work time should be dedicated to creative and strategic project work for the hotel, including selecting and scheduling talent for live music W Happenings, booking DJs for regular music programming, and working with appropriate departments/teams within the hotel (e.g., B&F, Convention Services) to provide additional music touch points throughout the guest and customer experience that are in line with the brand's sonic identity. The remaining 50% should, in most cases, be part of an existing arrangement to perform as DJ and spin as part of regular music programming.

The W Music Curator should liaise with the W Insider to provide insight into local music happenings and connections, to be included in the W Insider Cool Hunter guide, and leverage any shared connections to enhance the music experience within the hotel. In addition to maintaining existing relationships, the W Music Curator may need to spend some time outside of the hotel to further build networks and connections.

The W Music Curator should be the point-person for negotiating fees with talent and DJs and is expected to properly manage hotel budgets dedicated to music programming.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent networking and communications skills
  • Excellent and in-depth knowledge of the local music scene
  • Connections and strong network with local tastemakers in the music community
  • Expert in communicating through all relevant social media mediums, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and have substantial following
  • Must be able to DJ
  • Versatile background and experience that extend beyond DJ'ing (e.g., entertainment, PR, marketing)
  • Excellent talent negotiation skills and experience
  • Past experience in event-planning and promotions
  • Music Producer/Production experience preferred
  • A genuine personal interest in lifestyle events and information that is close to W's core values and brand positioning (beyond solely music)
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem resolution skills with an outgoing personality and ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and organization skills - ability to handle multiple tasks at once and follow-up whenever needed
  • Basic computer skills, preferably including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point (Photoshop/InDesign a plus).

Qualifications

  • Any combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • High School or equivalent, college degree preferred
  • Experience working in a lifestyle-related business or environment would be a highly positive attribute.

  • Specific W standards are to be met whenever on-property
  • Styling should be in line with W wardrobe and lifestyle but also uniquely personal to the W Music Curator
  • The W Music Curator should not have a standard uniform.
