Job Description:

Summary:

TheMusic Library Student Assistantsupports the operations of theMusic Libraryat theborrowingdesk. The student assistantorganizes theMusicLibrary's collections, answers phoneand chat inquiries, and provides preliminary referenceassistanceto patrons at the borrowing desk. The incumbentwillalsoassistwith special projectsdesigned to improve awareness of and access to theLibrary'scollections.

Essential Functions:

  • Checkinglibrary materialsin andoutand shelving them appropriately.

  • Assistingpatrons in the use of resources such assearching theLibrary'scatalogand music-specific databases.

  • Troubleshooting computers, audio equipment,copier,and other AV equipment.

  • Providing patrons with the status of materials requested.

  • Complete other duties at the discretion of management.

  • Curating social media profiles.

  • Inventory.

  • Event productionassistance.

  • Archival work.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • 10 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $18.40 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.

  • Enrolled American University student inFall2026.

  • Excellent customer service, organization, communication, andproblem-solvingskills.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work independentlyunder minimal supervision.

  • Strong attention to detailand the ability toprioritize and multi-taskin a fast-paced environment.

  • Some knowledgeofvarious genres ofmusic,experience with socialmediaandgood workethic.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Familiarity with the Library of Congress call number system, and some experiencetroubleshooting Mac and PCcomputers.

  • Students in the Department of Performing Artsor withthe ability to read musicare desirable.

  • Availability on Mondays and/or Thursdays between1-5:30PM is preferred.
