What does a museum custodian do?

A typical day for a Museum Custodian involves cleaning exhibit areas, hallways, restrooms, and public spaces while ensuring the safety of artifacts and displays. Dolly's Life of Many Colors Museum - Nashville, TN - PT & FT Hourly

About the Museum

Located in downtown Nashville inside Dolly Parton's SongTeller Hotel, Dolly's Life of Many Colors Museum invites guests to step into the extraordinary story of Dolly Parton-her Smoky Mountain childhood, her music, films, philanthropy, and the values that shaped her life.

Spanning more than 20,000 square feet, the museum brings guests behind the scenes of iconic moments while celebrating the heart, humor, and generosity that define Dolly's legacy.

Every guest who walks through our doors should feel the same warmth, joy, and sense of possibility that Dolly brings to the world. Our team makes that happen.

Position Summary

The Museum Custodian plays a key role in maintaining a clean, welcoming, and guest-ready environment throughout the museum during operating hours.

This position is responsible for ongoing upkeep, responsiveness, and presentation of the space-ensuring that every guest experiences a museum that feels cared for, comfortable, and thoughtfully maintained.

Working alongside the Guest Experience Team, this role supports both cleanliness and atmosphere, contributing to a seamless, high-quality visitor experience.

What You'll DoCare of Space & Cleanliness
  • Maintain clean, orderly, and guest-ready environments throughout the museum during open hours
  • Monitor and service restrooms regularly, including cleaning, sanitizing, and restocking (consumables provided)
  • Perform continuous light cleaning such as:
    • Spot cleaning glass, doors, and high-touch surfaces
    • Addressing spills and immediate cleaning needs

  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness in retail, lobby, and back-of-house areas
Guest-Facing Awareness
  • Maintain a professional, friendly presence while working in guest areas
  • Be mindful of guest experience-working efficiently and respectfully around visitors
  • Support a welcoming environment that reflects Dolly's values of kindness, warmth, and care
  • Communicate courteously with guests when needed (e.g., navigating around cleaning activity)
Exhibit & Specialty Care
  • Follow specific cleaning protocols for:
    • Specialty finishes
    • Exhibit elements and display areas
    • Theater-style seating
  • Use non-abrasive methods and approved materials only

  • Respond quickly to high-traffic impacts during peak periods
Safety & Accountability
  • Follow all safety and cleaning protocols, including proper use of equipment
  • Report maintenance, safety, or cleanliness concerns to leadership
  • Support a safe, organized, and well-maintained environment for both guests and staff
What Makes a Great Fit

We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work and understands that cleanliness is part of the guest experience-not separate from it.

Ideal candidates:

  • Work proactively rather than waiting to be asked
  • Are comfortable working around guests in a public-facing environment
  • Bring a positive, respectful, and team-oriented attitude
  • Appreciate being part of a larger guest experience and museum story
  • Are reliable, consistent, and take pride in doing things well
Qualifications
  • Previous custodial, housekeeping, or facilities experience preferred
  • Experience in hospitality, retail, or public-facing environments is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfortable being on your feet and moving throughout the museum for extended periods
  • Availability for weekends, holidays, and peak visitor times
Why Join Us

Working at Dolly's Life of Many Colors Museum means helping create an environment where every guest feels welcomed, inspired, and cared for.

This role is essential to that experience-ensuring the space reflects the same warmth, quality, and attention to detail that define Dolly's story.

If you take pride in your work, care about the details, and enjoy being part of a team that creates something special every day-you'll fit right in.

A Shared Purpose
