As the storytellers of South Carolina, the South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) shares the state's rich natural history, cultural diversity, innovative spirit, and artistic creativity through its permanent collections, educational programs, exhibitions, and digital resources.
The Event Support Associate supports event operations at the South Carolina State Museum by preparing event spaces, maintaining cleanliness, assisting during events, and restoring facilities afterward. The role ensures that all event areas meet established standards while safeguarding museum property and exhibits.
Job Responsibilities
• Prepare event spaces by setting up tables, chairs, linens, staging, and equipment according to event diagrams and specifications.
• Arrange and reset areas for various functions, including weddings, corporate events, and public programs.
• Maintain cleanliness of event spaces before, during, and after events.
• Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and event-related waste.
• Break down event setups and return spaces to standard configurations following events.
• Clean and sanitize event areas to ensure readiness for subsequent use.
• Move, store, and organize furniture, equipment, and supplies.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage, prep, and loading areas.
• Provide occasional gallery monitoring to support the safety of exhibits and guests.
• Adhere to all museum policies and procedures to protect facilities and collections.
• Collaborate with museum staff, event coordinators, and external vendors to support event operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including setup diagrams.
• Reliability and punctuality, with availability for nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in event setup, custodial services, hospitality, or a related field.
• Familiarity with event operations or facility support services.
Work Environment
Work is performed in a fast-paced, event-driven environment within museum facilities and occasionally outdoors. Duties require continuous movement; extended periods of standing and walking; and light to moderate physical labor including bending, reaching, and lifting items up to 25 pounds. The role involves interaction with guests, vendors, and staff, and may require navigating crowded or loud event spaces. Occasional administrative office work may be required. Most hours occur during evenings and weekends.
