A museum mountmaker designs, fabricates, and installs custom, conservation-grade display supports for fragile artifacts, specimens, and objects. Working collaboratively with collection managers, curators, and exhibit staff, the mountmaker creates secure and unobtrusive mounts that protect collection objects from damage while enhancing their presentation. This position requires expertise in metalworking - from brass to steel depending on the need, plastics fabrication, and the use of other archival materials.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with NHMU exhibits team members, collections managers, and curators to design and fabricate museum-quality, archival object mounts.
  • Oversee the safe handling of objects throughout the mountmaking process and ensure their successful installation in exhibit display cases.
  • Serve as a technical resource for advanced mountmaking projects, ensuring high standards of craftsmanship, safety, and preservation.
  • Closely adhere to industry and university best practices and safety requirements. A current driver's license may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:

Carpenter, IV: Requires 5+ years of related experience.
Preferences
To be considered for this position applicants must possess professional museum mountmaking experience and demonstrate expert art-handling skills, exceptional fine motor skills, and a thorough understanding of conservation-grade materials and fabrication techniques.
