What is a multimedia?

Multimedia professionals are individuals who create and design content that combines various forms of media, such as text, graphics, audio, video, and animation. They use specialized software and tools to develop engaging interactive experiences for websites, apps, advertisements, games, and educational materials. Multimedia professionals often collaborate with designers, programmers, and clients to ensure the content meets specific goals and appeals to target audiences. Their work requires creativity, technical skills, and an understanding of how different media elements work together.

What are the qualifications to get a multimedia job?

The qualifications to get a multimedia job depend largely on the specific type of career and industry. Video game programmers or animators should have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, animation, or a closely related subject, as well as experience from internships and summer jobs in the industry. Multimedia artists may be self-taught or have formal training, such as a bachelor’s or master’s degree in fine arts. Film and video designers should have a strong grasp of traditional and digital photography and filming. Other skills include creativity and interpersonal communication.

What are some common challenges multimedia professionals face when working on cross-functional projects?

Multimedia professionals often collaborate with teams such as marketing, IT, and design, which can lead to challenges like aligning creative vision with technical constraints and ensuring project timelines are met. Effective communication is essential, as team members may have different priorities and levels of familiarity with multimedia tools. Adapting quickly to new technologies and feedback, along with managing multiple deadlines, are also key challenges in this dynamic field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a multimedia specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Multimedia Specialist, a strong grasp of graphic design, video production, animation, and storytelling, often backed by a degree in multimedia arts or a related field, is essential. Proficiency in industry-standard tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects) and knowledge of web technologies or content management systems is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help individuals stand out by producing engaging and effective multimedia content. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering compelling visual experiences that meet client or organizational objectives in a dynamic digital landscape.

Job Description

NBC Connecticut is seeking an innovative, creative, and digitally minded Multiplatform Content Creator / Multimedia Journalist to join the CT Live team.

CT Live brings Connecticut to life through engaging stories about the people, places, food, entertainment, businesses, events, and experiences that make our state unique. Our content reaches audiences across broadcast, streaming, digital, social media, YouTube, and NBCConnecticut.com. We're looking for a creative storyteller who understands that today's audiences consume content across multiple platforms and can develop engaging stories that inform, entertain, and inspire wherever they choose to watch.

This is more than a traditional television MMJ role. It's an opportunity to help shape the future of CT Live by creating original content that lives across multiple platforms. From pitching story ideas and producing digital-first series to covering community events and experimenting with new storytelling formats, you'll play a key role in growing our audience and expanding the CT Live brand.

The ideal candidate is naturally curious, thrives on meeting new people, enjoys discovering what's new around Connecticut, and is energized by creating content that connects with audiences. Whether highlighting a local business, covering a community event, showcasing a hidden gem, or bringing a sponsor's story to life through authentic branded content, you'll bring creativity, collaboration, and a multiplatform mindset to every assignment.

Working alongside the Executive Producer, CT Live host, Commercial Producer and creative team, you'll pitch original ideas, shoot, write, edit, and produce compelling content that engages audiences, strengthens the CT Live brand, and helps bring innovative sponsorships and community partnerships to life through authentic storytelling.

Job Duties

  • Create compelling, multiplatform lifestyle content designed for broadcast, streaming, digital, social media, YouTube, and emerging platforms.

  • Develop original content that expands the CT Live brand while supporting audience growth, engagement, and sponsorship opportunities across every platform.

  • Research, shoot, write, edit, and produce premium lifestyle stories featuring Connecticut's people, businesses, entertainment, food, travel, nonprofits, and community.

  • Develop social-first storytelling that complements broadcast content while also creating original digital-exclusive series and sponsored campaigns.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Producer to identify content opportunities that maximize value across linear, streaming, digital, and social platforms.

  • Produce content that supports integrated sponsorships and branded partnerships while maintaining NBCUniversal's editorial standards.

  • Work closely with Sales, Marketing, Creative Services, and Digital teams to execute multiplatform campaigns that deliver measurable value for advertisers and audiences.

  • Create platform-specific content optimized for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, streaming, and NBCConnecticut.com.

  • Analyze audience engagement, platform performance, and emerging digital trends to continuously improve storytelling strategies.

  • Build relationships with community organizations, tourism partners, businesses, nonprofits, creators, and influencers to develop unique content opportunities.

  • Produce evergreen content that can be repurposed across multiple distribution platforms and marketing initiatives.

  • Represent CT Live at community events, sponsored activations, and station initiatives through live and recorded content.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Broadcast Journalism, Media Production, Digital Media, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of one experience as a Multimedia Journalist, Content Creator, Digital Producer, Lifestyle Producer, or similar role.
  • Demonstrated experience writing, shooting, editing, and producing professional-quality video content.
  • Experience creating content across multiple platforms, including broadcast television, streaming, websites, digital publishing, and social media.
  • Strong proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Creative Cloud, or comparable non-linear editing software.
  • Experience using mobile production tools and digital publishing platforms.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout Connecticut.

Additional Requirements

  • Interested candidates must submit a resume/CV through nbcunicareers.com to be considered.
  • Portfolio, demo reel, or links showcasing recent multiplatform content.
  • Three to five examples demonstrating storytelling, content creation, video production, and digital innovation.
  • Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must be covered by Solutions, NBCUniversal's Alternative Dispute Resolution Program.
  • Must become a member of SAG-AFTRA.
  • Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and community events as business needs require.
  • This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience creating digital-first, social-first, or multiplatform lifestyle content that extends beyond traditional television.
  • Strong understanding of audience behavior across broadcast, streaming, digital, social media, and emerging platforms.
  • Experience developing branded content, sponsored storytelling, or advertiser-supported campaigns while maintaining editorial integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to create engaging content optimized for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, OTT, and other digital platforms.
  • Strong storytelling skills with an eye for compelling visuals and platform-specific content.
  • Comfortable appearing on camera as a host when appropriate.
  • Experience using audience analytics, engagement metrics, and digital insights to inform content decisions.
  • Ability to identify emerging trends and quickly transform them into engaging, shareable content.
  • Experience collaborating with Sales, Marketing, Creative Services, Digital, and editorial teams on integrated multiplatform campaigns.
  • Knowledge of SEO, social media best practices, and digital content optimization.

  • Passion for creating innovative content that informs, entertains, and connects audiences while strengthening relationships with Connecticut's communities.
  • Knowledge of Connecticut communities, culture, businesses, and events.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
