ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

SUMMARY: The Poly Post staff members contribute to the production and promotion of Cal Poly Pomona's student-run newspaper and magazine, including editorial content, multimedia storytelling, marketing, and audience engagement. Positions are available across writing, editing, visual design, digital media, marketing, and operations.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

  • Leadership & Editorial Oversight: Planning content, managing deadlines, leading meetings (e.g., Editor in Chief, Managing Editor).
  • Content Creation: Writing, editing, and curating stories for news, sports, arts, culture, and Spanish-language communities (e.g., Section Editors, La Voz Editor).
  • Copy & Accuracy: Proofreading, fact-checking, and refining written work (Copy Editors).
  • Digital & Multimedia: Managing web and social media content; creating video, audio, and photo stories (Web, Video, Audio, and Photo Editors).
  • Design: Layouts, graphics, and promotional visuals for print and digital formats (Editorial & Marketing Designers).
  • Marketing & Sales: Promoting the publication, creating ads, organizing events, and engaging with sponsors (Marketing Assistants, Account Executives).
  • Logistics: Managing physical distribution of print issues and supporting team operations (Distribution Manager, Alternate Staff).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated writing, editing, or design abilities applicable to the position (portfolio or writing samples recommended).

Basic proficiency in relevant tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, CMS platforms like WordPress, or social media platforms).

Willingness and availability to attend meetings, cover events, and contribute weekly content or tasks.

Ability to manage time effectively, work to deadlines, and collaborate in a team environment.

For specific roles:

  • Familiarity with AP Style (editorial roles).
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish (La Voz Editor or translation support).
  • Customer service or sales experience (Account Executive roles).
  • Interest or experience in digital storytelling such as photography, videography, podcasting, or audio editing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic Background:
    • Enrolled in or pursuing a major in Communication, Marketing, Graphic Design, Journalism, English, Media Studies, or a closely related field.
    • Students from other majors with directly relevant experience are welcome to apply.
  • Skills & Experience:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to clarity, accuracy, and audience engagement.
    • Advanced experience with relevant tools:
      • Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) for design and layout.
      • CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Squarespace) for digital publishing.
      • Video/audio editing software (Premiere Pro, Audacity, etc.) for multimedia roles.
      • Social media scheduling and analytics tools for engagement roles.
    • Understanding of journalism ethics and editorial standards.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • High level of attention to detail in editing, layout, and production.
    • Creative mindset, adaptability, and willingness to learn.
    • Strong collaboration and communication skills across teams and projects.
  • Role-Specific Preferences:
    • Prior leadership experience (Editor in Chief, Managing Editor).
    • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (La Voz Editor).

ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
