What is an MSP Project Engineer?

An MSP Project Engineer is an IT professional who works for a Managed Service Provider (MSP) and is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing technical projects for clients. They handle tasks such as system migrations, network upgrades, cloud deployments, and other technology initiatives. MSP Project Engineers collaborate with clients to assess needs, design solutions, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. They also provide technical expertise and troubleshooting during and after project completion.

How does an MSP Project Engineer typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during project delivery?

An MSP Project Engineer works closely with both clients and internal technical teams throughout the project lifecycle. They serve as the primary technical point of contact, gathering requirements, providing updates, and addressing concerns. Internally, they coordinate with service desk staff, network engineers, and project managers to ensure seamless implementation and timely delivery. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders are crucial for success in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MSP Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MSP Project Engineer, you need a strong foundation in IT infrastructure, networking, and systems administration, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like CompTIA, Cisco, or Microsoft. Expertise with tools such as remote monitoring and management (RMM) platforms, ticketing systems, and cloud services is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure projects are delivered efficiently, client expectations are met, and technical issues are resolved proactively in managed service environments.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced MSP environment, is comfortable working on-site with clients, and has a deep understanding of multi-tenant support, project execution, and modern IT infrastructure.  You will be responsible for designing, deploying, and upgrading systems across a wide range of client environments. This includes servers, networking, cloud platforms, cybersecurity solutions, and endpoint technologies.

Your work as a Project Engineer has several components:

    • Network installations and migrations
    • Windows server-to-server or server-to-cloud migrations
    • Office builds and moves
    • MDM/MAM + Conditional Access implementation
  • Collaborate with project managers and account teams to provide regular updates and create and update documentation.
  • Function as an escalation point for resolution of project issues.
  • Travel to client sites across NYC and surrounding area for installations, assessments, and hands-on technical work (estimated 50-75%).
  • Communicate clearly with clients, acting as a technical expert and trusted advisor.

Our ideal Project Engineer has the following qualifications:

  • 3-5+ years IT MSP experience including a minimum of 2+ years of hands-on project engineering experience (mandatory).
  • Strong experience implementing IT infrastructure projects from design through completion.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows Server, AD, and common MSP toolsets (RMM, PSA).
  • Hands-on experience with firewall and network platforms (e.g., Meraki, FortiGate, SonicWALL, or Sophos), including configuration, troubleshooting, and network assessments
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Entra ID and Intune, including Conditional Access policy and MDM/MAM enrollment configuration and troubleshooting
  • Experience with server virtualization and migration (VMware, Hyper-V, physical-to-virtual and virtual-to-virtual migrations)
  • Ability to work independently and on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong aptitude for time and note entry within a PSA.
  • Understanding of predictive and hybrid project methodologies, including roles, responsibilities, and work breakdown structure (WBS)
  • Located in or near New York City and able to comfortably travel to client sites as required

Preferred requirements:

  • Relevant technical certifications (e.g., Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco, PMI).
  • Specific experience with: Microsoft Azure, 365, and SharePoint
  • Meraki Networking
  • Windows Server
  • Modern security principals - MFA, SSO, Conditional Access, MDM, MAM
  • ConnectWise PSA

The target salary for this role is $100,000-$110,000 per year and will operate in a hybrid model out of the New York City office. If you're motivated by meaningful client relationships, strategic selling, and a dynamic work environment, we want to hear from you!
