What is an MSP L2?

MSP L2 engineers, or Managed Service Provider Level 2 engineers, are IT professionals who handle more complex technical issues than Level 1 (L1) support. They are responsible for troubleshooting escalated problems, configuring systems, managing networks, and supporting clients with advanced technical needs. L2 engineers often work closely with L1 support to resolve issues efficiently and may also assist in implementing new technologies and maintaining IT infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MSP L2?

To thrive as an MSP L2 Technician, you need strong troubleshooting abilities, in-depth knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, networking fundamentals, and typically an associate degree or relevant certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft certifications. Familiarity with remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools, ticketing systems, and backup solutions is essential for daily operations. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks under pressure set standout candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for efficiently resolving client issues, maintaining service levels, and ensuring seamless IT operations in a managed services environment.

What are some common challenges faced by an MSP L2, and how can they be addressed?

As an MSP L2 technician, one of the most common challenges is handling escalated technical issues that require in-depth troubleshooting across diverse client environments. These issues often involve complex network, server, or application problems that L1 technicians could not resolve. Time management and prioritization are crucial, as you may juggle multiple tickets and urgent requests. Staying updated with evolving technologies and maintaining clear communication with both clients and L1 teams helps address these challenges effectively. Collaborating closely with team members and utilizing shared documentation can also streamline resolution processes.

Description
About Exigent
Exigent is a long-standing, people-focused Managed Services Provider built on strong values, dependable processes, and a commitment to exceptional client service. About the Role
We are seeking an experienced MSP Field Systems Engineer - Level 2 who combines strong technical troubleshooting skills with exceptional client service and communication.
This is a field-focused position supporting client locations throughout New Jersey and New York City. The engineer may be primarily assigned to one client environment based on current business needs but will remain part of Exigent's broader service delivery team and may support additional clients, projects, or locations as priorities change.
The role includes a combination of on-site and remote support across endpoints, servers, networks, Microsoft 365, cloud services, and security technologies. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, technically capable, and comfortable serving as the visible face of Exigent at client locations.
MSP experience is required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide on-site and remote support for desktops, laptops, servers, networks, Microsoft 365, cloud services, and security technologies
  • Serve as a trusted technical presence at client locations, with the potential to be primarily assigned to one client while supporting others as business needs evolve
  • Troubleshoot issues ranging from end-user requests to more complex server, network, cloud, and infrastructure incidents
  • Own assigned tickets through resolution or appropriate escalation, including communication, documentation, coordination, and follow-up
  • Perform hands-on field engineering work, including equipment installation and replacement, deployments, connectivity troubleshooting, and site-related technical support
  • Assist with client onboarding, technology refreshes, migrations, infrastructure upgrades, and other project work
  • Collaborate with internal engineers, project teams, client stakeholders, and third-party vendors
  • Maintain accurate ticket notes, client documentation, inventories, and configuration records
  • Follow established security, change-management, escalation, and service delivery processes
  • Participate in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule
  • Represent Exigent professionally and create a positive client experience

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Professional Skills:
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • A calm, professional presence with clients, executives, end users, vendors, and internal teams
  • Strong organizational habits, attention to detail, and reliable follow-through
  • High ownership mentality; you see problems through resolution or structured escalation
  • Ability to work independently while remaining closely coordinated with the broader service team
  • Adaptability and sound judgment when balancing simple requests, complex escalations, and changing priorities
  • Consistent, accurate ticket documentation and time entry
  • Willingness to continuously learn, train, and pursue relevant certifications
  • Ability to travel regularly to client sites throughout New Jersey and New York City
  • Availability for standard hours (8:30am-5:30pm) plus occasional after-hours work

Technical Skills (Required):
  • 5+ years of professional IT support experience, including at least 3 years supporting multiple client environments within an MSP, VAR, or IT consulting organization
  • Strong experience supporting Windows Desktop and Windows Server environments
  • Administration and troubleshooting experience with Microsoft 365, Active Directory, email, collaboration, identity, and cloud services
  • Experience supporting macOS in business environments
  • Practical knowledge of business networks, including switches, firewalls, wireless networks, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and internet connectivity
  • Experience with virtualization, backup and recovery technologies, server hardware, and storage
  • Working knowledge of modern endpoint, identity, email, and cybersecurity technologies
  • Experience using ticketing/PSA and remote monitoring and management platforms
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and escalation skills

Preferred Experience:
  • ConnectWise Manage or a similar ticketing/PSA platform
  • Remote Monitoring & Management platforms such as Automate, NinjaOne, or Kaseya
  • Experience supporting a primary client environment while remaining accountable to MSP standards and processes
  • Relevant Microsoft, networking, cloud, or security certifications
