MATERIALS REVIEW BOARD (MRR) ENGINEER — ROTORCRAFT (PART 27) JOB # 1132

Position: Materials Review Board (MRR) Engineer — Rotorcraft (Part 27)
Reports To: MRR Engineering Lead
Department: Quality Engineering
Status: Full-time, On-site, Salary, Exempt
Location: Menominee, Michigan
Schedule: Monday – Friday, flexible days/hours based on engineering, production, and flight test business requirements.
Pay Range: $65k-$75k annually DOE

POSITION SUMMARY
The MRR Engineer supports the Material Review Board process for a Part 27 normal category rotorcraft manufacturer, evaluating nonconforming parts, materials, and assemblies produced under the company's FAA Production Certificate (PC) and Type Certificate (TC). This role determines appropriate disposition — use-as-is, rework, repair, or scrap — for airframe structures, dynamic components, avionics, and mechanical systems, ensuring all decisions preserve continued airworthiness and comply with FAA Part 21 quality system requirements. The role works closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Production Certificate holders' Quality System, and DERs/ODA Unit Members where engineering disposition authority is required.

BASIC WORKER FUNCTION
The MRR Engineer supports the Material Review Board process for a Part 27 normal category rotorcraft manufacturer, evaluating nonconforming parts, materials, and assemblies produced under the company's FAA Production Certificate (PC) and Type Certificate (TC).
This role determines appropriate disposition — use-as-is, rework, repair, or scrap — for airframe structures, dynamic components, avionics, and mechanical systems, ensuring all decisions preserve continued airworthiness and comply with FAA Part 21 quality system requirements.
The role works closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Production Certificate holders' Quality System, and DERs/ODA Unit Members where engineering disposition authority is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Review nonconformance reports (NCRs) for helicopter structures, dynamic components (rotor systems, drivetrain, controls), and mechanical/electrical systems against Type Design data and engineering drawings.
• Perform engineering evaluation of dimensional, material, and process nonconformances against Part 27 airworthiness standards, including structural margin and fatigue/life-limited part implications.
• Coordinate with Design Engineering and, where required, Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) or ODA Unit Members for dispositions requiring engineering approval or Type Design data changes.
• Draft and route repair schemes; ensure repairs to critical/life-limited parts (e.g., rotor blades, mast, transmission components) receive appropriate structural substantiation.
• Participate in MRB meetings, documenting rationale and maintaining traceability per the company's FAA-approved Quality System.
• Support root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for recurring nonconformances, particularly on dynamic and flight-critical components.
• Interface with Supplier Quality on nonconformances from vendor-supplied parts (e.g., castings, forgings, composite structures, electrical/avionics components).
• Maintain MRB records and disposition logs to support FAA audits, Production Certificate surveillance, and continued airworthiness recordkeeping.
• Investigate repeat non conformances and suggest design improvements that can help alleviate repeat MRR.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, or related Engineering discipline.
• 0–3 years of relevant experience (internships/co-ops in aerospace manufacturing or MRO considered favorably).
• Experience in Structural analysis is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Familiarity with GD amp;T and interpretation of engineering drawings, including tolerance stack-up basics.
• Basic understanding of aerospace materials and processes: machining, sheet metal, castings/forgings, and composite structures.
• Strong analytical skills with ability to reason through structural/functional impact of a deviation.
• Clear written communication for documentation and disposition rationale.
• Familiarity with 14 CFR Part 27 (Normal Category Rotorcraft) and Part 21 (Certification Procedures).
• Exposure to rotorcraft dynamic systems: rotor systems, drivetrains, governors, or flight controls.
• Understanding of life-limited parts (LLP) tracking and critical parts programs.
• Familiarity with AS9100 quality management systems.
• Experience with CAD (CATIA, SolidWorks, NX) and PLM/nonconformance tracking systems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to perform work in office, manufacturing, and shop-floor environments.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position and operate a computer and other standard office equipment for extended periods.
• Ability to move throughout the facility and access production areas to inspect parts, materials, assemblies, and aircraft components.
• Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, crouch, reach, and change position while examining components.
• Ability to handle documents, tools, measuring devices, and aircraft components as required to perform assigned duties.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment while working in designated production areas.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

WORKING CONDITIONS
• Combination of office and shop floor environment; PPE compliance required on the production floor.
• Occasional coordination with suppliers on nonconforming vendor parts.
• Overtime and weekend shift may be needed depending on factory workload.
