How much do motor control jobs pay per hour?
What is a Motor Control job?
A Motor Control job involves designing, developing, and maintaining systems that regulate the operation of electric motors. Professionals in this field work with motor drives, controllers, and automation systems to ensure efficient and precise motor performance. They may also troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues, optimize energy efficiency, and integrate motors into larger industrial or automation systems. Motor control engineers commonly work in manufacturing, robotics, HVAC, and automotive industries.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in Motor Control?
Professionals in Motor Control typically focus on designing, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining motor control systems within industrial or manufacturing settings. Daily tasks often involve programming and configuring control devices, diagnosing and repairing electrical issues, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Collaboration with engineers, technicians, and maintenance teams is common, especially when integrating new equipment or optimizing system performance. This role offers hands-on technical challenges and the opportunity to contribute directly to efficient and safe production processes.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Motor Control position, and why are they important?
To excel in a Motor Control role, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, motor systems, and automation, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PLC programming, motor controllers, VFDs (variable frequency drives), and relevant certifications such as Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams set candidates apart. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of motor control systems critical to industrial and manufacturing environments.

Job description
Position Overview:
As a Field Service Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in bringing our automation systems to life, from in-house testing to on-site commissioning. You'll work closely with engineers and customers to ensure seamless installation, commissioning, and operation of our control solutions, including Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). This dynamic position offers a blend of hands-on field work and meticulous testing, requiring a strong technical background, a problem-solving mindset, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- In-house
- Participate in the assembly and testing of control panels before deployment
- Configure, commission, and troubleshoot VFDs under controlled conditions
- Collaborate with engineers to debug and refine electrical installations
- Document panel assembly and testing procedures for future reference
- On-site
- Supervise electrical contractors during the installation of control panels and associated equipment
- Perform electrical installations under the direction of engineers and following established guidelines
- Power up control panels and verify communication with connected machinery
- Check Input/Output (I/O) points for proper operation and troubleshoot any discrepancies
- Configure, commission, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for motor control applications
- Understand VFD parameters and settings to ensure optimal performance of motors and machinery
- Troubleshoot VFD-related issues, such as motor faults, communication errors, and parameter mismatches
- Perform preventative maintenance on VFDs to ensure their reliability and longevity
- Assist engineers with system commissioning, including program uploading, VFD parameter adjustments, and system testing
- Train maintenance personnel on basic operation and troubleshooting of the control system
- Document installation and commissioning activities for future reference.
- Maintain a safe and organized work environment
- Build strong relationships with clients and provide technical support as needed
What we need you to have:
- Associate’s degree in electrical technology or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Two years of experience in industrial electrical installations
- Proven ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams
- Strong understanding of basic electrical principles, including AC/DC power, motor control, and electrical safety protocols
- Strong understanding of mechanical principles
- Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and industrial communication protocols is a plus
- Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) is highly desirable
- Knowledge of motor control principles and applications is a strong asset
- Ability to use VFD diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot and resolve issues
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues independently
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with engineers, clients, and contractors
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Valid driver's license
- Domestic travel requirement between 50-75%
