What is motion control engineering?

Motion control engineering is a field focused on the design and implementation of systems that control the movement of machines or mechanical systems. This often involves the use of motors, actuators, sensors, and controllers to achieve precise positioning, speed, and acceleration in applications such as robotics, manufacturing automation, and aerospace. Motion control engineers work with both hardware and software to develop efficient, reliable movement solutions. Their work is critical in industries where accurate and repeatable movement is required.

What are some common challenges faced by motion control engineers when integrating new automation systems into existing manufacturing environments?

Motion control engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between new automation components and legacy systems, minimizing downtime during integration, and maintaining precise synchronization across various machines. Troubleshooting communication protocols and adapting control algorithms to fit unique production requirements can also be complex. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as maintenance and software engineers, is essential to address these challenges and achieve a seamless integration process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a motion control engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Motion Control Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, with expertise in automation, robotics, and control systems. Familiarity with PLC programming, servo systems, CAD software, and relevant certifications (such as Certified Motion Control Professional) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and troubleshoot complex systems. These competencies ensure precise, efficient, and reliable motion solutions critical to manufacturing and automation industries.

What is the difference between Motion Control Engineering vs Robotics Engineering?

At Thorlabs, we design and manufacture components, instruments, and systems that transform the world by identifying, enabling, and accelerating key photonics (i.e., light-based) technologies. Backed by a dedicated workforce of more than 3,000 employees worldwide, Thorlabscontributes to cutting-edge research and real-world innovation.

Whether you're early in your career or bringing years of experience, you’ll find opportunities to grow, take ownership, and make meaningful contributions from day one. We know every employee brings unique talents and perspectives that fuel our success, and we seek driven individuals who are excited to make an impact in a fun, fast-moving culture.

The Electrical/Embedded Engineer II is responsible for the design, development, integration, and firmware support of advanced electronic systems used in scientific imaging products, microscope systems, and research instrumentation. This position works within cross-functional, global development teams to create innovative hardware and embedded solutions that integrate with complex software systems for image acquisition, high speed data processing, system control, and calibration.

The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between hardware design and low-level embedded software, owning electronic modules from initial architecture, circuit design, prototyping, validation, and production release through manufacturing support. This position requires a strong understanding of electronic circuit design, embedded systems, system integration, and troubleshooting, with an emphasis on developing robust, reliable, and manufacturable products within a lean manufacturing environment.

The Electrical/Embedded Engineer II will contribute to the successful transition of new products from concept to production and will occasionally participate in technical discussions with customers, sales, field service personnel, suppliers, and manufacturing teams.

  • Design and develop electronics for precision scientific instruments, microscope systems, and peripherals.
  • Develop embedded firmware and hardware abstraction layers for microcontrollers and embedded processors using C/C++.
  • Design low-noise analog, digital, and mixed-signal electronic circuits for precision instrumentation, imaging systems, detectors, laser control, motion control, and data acquisition.
  • Own electrical designs from concept through schematic capture, PCB layout, prototype validation, debugging, manufacturing release, and sustaining engineering.
  • Develop electro-optical and electro-mechanical designs supporting new catalog products and custom systems.
  • Integrate electrical, firmware, software, optical, and electromechanical subsystems into complete imaging systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex system‑level issues involving hardware, firmware, software, optics, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Perform circuit simulation and electronic verification using industry‑standard simulation and laboratory tools.
  • Design manufacturing test fixtures, validation procedures, and production test plans.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation including BOMs, schematics, PCB files, drawings, test procedures, manufacturing documentation, and material specifications.
