Position: Long Term Substitute - English/Language Arts - 12 weeks- Fall 2026
Reports To: Middle School Administrator
Position Summary: MOT Charter is a small school on a mission to provide a 21st century learning experience to our students. Teachers at MOT Charter are passionate learners and maximize our students' intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development, including the ability to solve problems and contribute to their communities as enlightened and responsible citizens.
Planning and preparation
  • Expertise in 8th grade language arts standards and proficient in aligning curriculum to the Common Core as well as MOT Charter standards.
  • Knowledge of reading theory and practices, and how they support success in middle grades.
  • Work within the established 8th grade reading and writing curriculum and jointly plan with the classroom teacher, partner 7th language arts teacher, and other content area teachers to ensure the delivery of coherent language arts instruction.
  • In collaboration with administrators and teachers, augment course content to meet student needs and achieve MOT Charter School's academic goals.
  • Be conversant in the learning standards from other disciplines to enhance cross content integration.
  • Collaborate regularly with the teaching staff by attending content-focused meetings.

Instruction and Student Achievement
  • Orient students to their course, communicate requirements and maintain accessibility to students.
  • Conduct instruction using problem-solving and integration to the extent possible with other coursework.
  • Take ownership for student's academic progress and attendance.
  • Communicate high expectations and show an active interest in student achievement.
  • Establish and maintain a positive rapport with families.
  • Conduct conferences with students and parents (or other responsible adults).
  • Provide opportunities for individualized instruction to help each student achieve MOT Charter School curricular objectives.
  • Alert administrators to concerns about student performance and progress.
  • Maintain regular contact with students and families through email, Infinite Campus, & Schoology.
  • Support students with the set-up and maintenance of their learning environment.
  • Support students through basic computer troubleshooting.
  • Utilize online resources for instruction and communication.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with other faculty, students and parents to provide a positive experience for students.
  • Build community by contributing to school message boards, newsletters and participating in school events.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience at the middle school level in ELA
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant field.

Other Required Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, Outlook and in the use of Schoology or similar learning platform.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and tools.
