What is a molding process engineer?

A Molding Process Engineer is a professional who specializes in designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting molding processes used to manufacture plastic or metal parts. They work closely with production teams to ensure that molding operations are efficient, cost-effective, and produce high-quality products. Their responsibilities often include selecting materials, setting process parameters, improving cycle times, and implementing quality control measures. Molding Process Engineers commonly work in industries such as automotive, electronics, medical devices, and consumer goods manufacturing.

What are some typical challenges a molding process engineer faces when optimizing production processes?

Molding Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as minimizing cycle times while maintaining high product quality, troubleshooting defects like warping or incomplete fills, and implementing process improvements without disrupting ongoing production. Balancing the demands of efficiency, safety, and equipment reliability is also common, especially when introducing new materials or technologies. Collaborating closely with maintenance, quality assurance, and production teams is essential to address these challenges effectively and ensure smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a molding process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Molding Process Engineer, you need a solid foundation in materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing processes, usually supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, molding simulation tools, and quality control systems, as well as certifications like Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing, are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and continuous process improvement in molding operations.

What is the difference between Molding Process Engineer vs Injection Molding Technician?

AspectMolding Process EngineerInjection Molding Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications like Six SigmaHigh school diploma or technical training, on-the-job experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning processes, analyzing data, improving manufacturing methodsOperating machines, setting up molds, troubleshooting

Total Plastic Solutions

Job description

Total Plastic Solutions is seeking an experienced Process Engineer to develop, optimize, troubleshoot, and sustain injection molding processes. This position is responsible for establishing stable, repeatable, and scientifically controlled processes that produce conforming products while meeting safety, quality, delivery, scrap, and productivity goals.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on injection molding experience, a disciplined scientific-molding approach, and the ability to solve root causes rather than rely on temporary adjustments or tribal knowledge. Experience with blow molding is a strong plus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

โ€ขDevelop, validate, document, and maintain robust injection molding processes.

โ€ขEstablish process windows using scientific molding principles, material characteristics, mold requirements, and equipment capability.

โ€ขLead new mold trials, process development, sampling, qualification, and production launch activities.

โ€ขPerform process studies, including fill analysis, gate-seal studies, pressure-loss studies, cooling evaluations, and process-window development.

โ€ขTroubleshoot molding defects such as short shots, flash, burns, splay, contamination, dimensional variation, sink, warpage, voids, weld lines, and cosmetic defects.

โ€ขIdentify and correct root causes involving machines, molds, materials, methods, personnel, and environmental conditions.

โ€ขProvide urgent, hands-on technical support when presses are down or processes become unstable.

โ€ขReduce scrap, downtime, excessive start-up material, cycle time, and unplanned process adjustments.

โ€ขEnsure machines are returned to approved process settings following troubleshooting or maintenance.

โ€ขOptimize cycle times without compromising product quality, mold protection, equipment reliability, or validated process requirements.

โ€ขReview and approve process changes through the established change-control and validation processes.

โ€ขSupport installation and qualification activities, including IQ, OQ, and PQ, when required.

โ€ขDevelop and maintain process sheets, setup documentation, standard work, troubleshooting guides, and process-control records.

โ€ขAnalyze process data, trends, scrap reports, downtime, cavity performance, and production metrics.

โ€ข Support PFMEAs, control plans, capability studies, DOE activities, corrective

actions, and continuous-improvement projects.

โ€ข Work closely with Production, Quality, Tooling, Maintenance, Materials,

Automation, and Project Management.

โ€ข Train and mentor Process Technicians, Junior Process Engineers, Setup

Technicians, and Production Supervisors.

โ€ข Promote the use of documented technical knowledge instead of undocumented,

person-dependent practices.

โ€ข Participate in customer, supplier, and regulatory audits as needed.

โ€ข Maintain compliance with applicable requirements, including ISO 9001, ISO 13485,

AS9100, customer specifications, and internal procedures.

โ€ข Follow all safety, housekeeping, environmental, and lockout/tagout requirements.

โ€ข Perform other related duties as assigned.

Blow Molding Experience โ€“ Preferred

Candidates with blow molding experience will receive additional consideration. Preferred

experience includes:

โ€ข Extrusion blow molding, injection blow molding, or injection stretch blow molding.

โ€ข Parison programming and wall-thickness control.

โ€ข Blow pressure, mold cooling, venting, pinch-off, flash, and leak-test optimization.

โ€ข Troubleshooting issues such as uneven wall thickness, weak weld lines, distortion,

thinning, leaks, and excessive flash.

โ€ข Blow molding equipment setup, processing, maintenance coordination, and

automation.

โ€ข Development and validation of stable blow molding process windows.

Required Qualifications

โ€ข Associate or bachelorโ€™s degree in Plastics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent hands-on

experience may be considered.

โ€ข Minimum of three to five years of injection molding process development or

process-engineering experience.

โ€ข Strong understanding of thermoplastic materials, drying requirements, material

handling, mold construction, cooling systems, hot runners, and auxiliary

equipment.

โ€ข Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex molding and tooling

problems.

โ€ข Experience with hydraulic, electric, or hybrid injection molding machines.

โ€ข Ability to interpret part drawings, specifications, tolerances, process data, and

quality requirements.

โ€ข Working knowledge of statistical process control, process capability, root-cause

analysis, and structured problem-solving.

โ€ข Ability to work directly on the production floor and respond with urgency to

technical problems.

โ€ข Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

โ€ข Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and manufacturing ERP or production monitoring

systems.

Preferred Qualifications

โ€ข RJG, Paulson, AIM Institute, or equivalent scientific-molding training.

โ€ข Experience with RJG eDART, cavity-pressure monitoring, or similar processmonitoring

technology.
